...I am actually running a KT4V with a VIA KT400 chipset with a 1.1Ghz Duron. Right now, typing this, with 2.2GB Ram running Windows 7 Ultimate.

Here's the thing, I've overclocked this Duron with limited performance increases because I'm only stable up to 1.6Ghx with a 166Mhx FSB.

So, I wanna drop an AMD Athlon XP Barton 3200 2.2Ghx in it, in fact I'm about to pull the plug on one but I want to know what you all think.

I've been trolling this site for over a year and signed up now that I'm done with Windows XP and want to max this old Socket A.

Is my chipset going to cause me troubles running this CPU? I'm also confused by the User's guide, it says I can only install ONE DDR400 DIMM? I have 3 DIMM slots. Anyways, I put a second GIG DIMM in, using DDR333. Now my DRAM is clocked at 333/166mhz, will the DDR400/200mhz CPU cause any memory slow downs or failures?

Am I going to have to find Drivers for my Motherboard if I change it?

I've never done this before and I need to know what I am facing. Seems to me like a straight forward swap but, how often is that actually true?

Thanks, in advance!

That motherboard does not support the 3200 barton, you would only be able to go 3000.

With that said, Have you thought about building a new pc? I just picked up this cheap!

Biostar H61 = 38$ shipped
Intel G440 = 24$ shipped
2x2GB DDR3 = 24$ shipped

86$ total that is LEAP years away from the old socket 462

Hi

Wellcome to the TPU community

+1 brandonwh64; That motherboard does not support the 3200 barton

atb (all the best)

Law-II

Just to reiterate what everyone else has said, that board will only support up to 166MHz FSB processors. That being said, the fastest CPU that you can put in it is the 3000+. If you just want to play around with old hardware, with those socket A systems you could change the multiplier by jumpering pins together (I used bits of stripped ethernet cable to jumper the socket holes on the MB back when). There should still be diagrams out there if you search for it. However for any huge difference in speed a new system would be the way to go, even if it's low end parts.

holy crap old system is old a 3200 is still fking old
you need a complete system upgrade

The other thing is that the Via KT400 chipset doesn't have the lock for the PCI or AGP port
so your overclock will be pretty much limited anyways ;)

7.5X 266 = 2000mhz (orig example, too much diff m2600)
8X 266 = 2128mhz
7.5X 292 = 2190mhz
or something like thet

What you know about these? one thing sure.. will be fine!:rockout:

:shadedshu :slap:

EDIT: I think i should explain....
Barton 2500 is 11x166 & Barton 2600 11.5x166
The board doesn't support much over 400 FSB (200) if you get DDR400 Ram so...
7.5x200=1500
8x200=1600
He may get 220-230 max of this board , i used to own one...

But yes even if the board (Bios) doesn't support Barton it may still works but it's 50/50 chance

Thing is it's a waste of money & time , better of with something new the cheapest AMD duron (AM2-3?) out there would beat up that old Barton even oc
Or what brandonwh64 posted...

One last thing... We may all have been trolled?

I willing send one 2600+ barton for free of charge, only I ask for postage cost. Send me a PM if you intrested. But you need a better heatsink!
Thets should do.
Beside,I agree on who advise to build a new sys. If the OP dont have money, I think939 165 opty with the old DDR rams would be the cheapest,.( still need MB, video, may power supply)

The mobile chips were very good too back then. But you might want to check if they'll work right with your board. I had a mobile 2500+ back in the day. It would not work with one NF2 board but it would work with a KT. However, I could never clock it past 2.25Ghz. Literally the board had a limiter.

You'd have to check with your manufacturer for info then do a search to find how far others took theirs.

Take a look over e-bay. I got myself a 3200+ lately for 8$ shipped. Of course you have to find the max supported cpu for your mobo but at that price man you can bring it back to life.

Jesus...that setup is like plankton in the ecology of the computing world...

Well?

The guys in the Socket A Club say it will work, FSB is an actual 200MHz with a DDR400Mhz result, both are acceptable on my MoBo. If it won't, I'll overclock it a bit to get 2.2GHz, or slightly better. Or, in other words, Twice as fast.

My DRAM is clocked at 333MHz but that shouldn't cause many problems, if any.

Now I just need to find a 4x AGP card for under $50. I want a ATI 4650 or a 3650, it's been tough to find any that aren't PCIe. Unfortunately, I have PCIcrappy. ;) Windows 7 won't give me anything better than 1024 x 768 on this stock crappy VGA card, I don't even know what it is!! Running XP, I had better options.

I know I should upgrade but, I'm not a gamer, aside from some Facebook games, and I just want to be able to watch Netflix and to surf a bit faster.

I'm unemployed right now and can't justify a new build, so I'm gonna piece this one together and use it to find work! BTW, this puny Duron worked fine with XP. But I needed to upgrade to 7 in order to help my ancient brother, whose still learning to use a comp, who has 7.

He's buying the CPU, and if I can find a decent AGP card, he'll buy that too.

Somebody out there appreciates me!

Sorry op, but your board will not run any 3200+. It supports up to a 2800+ proc. But hey you can get one of those for next to nothing and will be a huge step up from that duron. Also I wouldn't even bother with a 3 or 4 series Ati card in that system. Your cpu will bottleneck the crap out of it. Your best bet would be a x series or something along the lines of a 9800 xt or 2400 pro. If your hell bet on soaket stuff pm me I have shit tons of it. Along with cpu's and Agp gpus I might be able to help you with.
