If anyone has been getting annoyed with high temps on the 4870 this might be of interest, i have been going crazy with the temps on a stock cooler.

Everest was reporting
53c (dispIO)
86c! (memIO)
56C (Shader)

I knew i had to sort out the temps because the above were at idle too. At load theyd be about 85/110/75.

I tried the accelero S1 on it and the changes where incredible, if anyone wants to cool there 4870 on air go for the S1 and put a 120 or 2 x 120's on the cooler, its cheap as hell and effective as hell. Heres my temps in GPUZ now.

At load now i know for sure that the gpu core is around 65c which is more than better on air for a 4870 and well within the temp limits, also ignore the fan speed, thats just what the card would set the fan at itself if there was a stock fan attached to the card, i have my 120 at 100%. Let us know what you think Peeps and post your experiences.

Iye ive got some good sinks on them already, seems to be doing the job, the 120 is keeping them cool. That was my biggest worry when moving over to the s1.

the old temps or the s1 temps equal to yours ch@no?

I used an s1 on my old 4850 too, i acheived like 30c idle lol it was great, i think it was about 50-55c load. The 4870 is so bad on stock fans. You cant change the fan speed on my card too, fortunately the 120 runs at 100% coz its pluggged into mobo.

I actually went with a Scythe Musashi on my 4890.

I upgraded the fans a little to some Scythe 120s (still quiet and slim) and now my memIO peaks at 85C. But this is at 1.5v and 990 on the core.

You can limit the MemIO temps by limiting the mem overclock. from benches I've seen, even the games that benefit most from a memory overclock only net 3%~ or so from a massive OC. At the expensive of significantly higher memIO temps.

A friend ownes a HD4870 cooled by an Accelero S1 with two Scythe Kaze Jyu Slim 100x100x12mm fans ( perfect fit ) . Around 60 in full load , with the overclocked GPU ( 830 for the core ). Pretty silent too ... This cooling solution costs @25EUR . Nice..

Yeah it really is brilliant, im getting a lian li case next week with upside down motherboard tray so im hoping that with the graphics card at the top i can shed off some more centigrades.

Id also like to know if anyone uses a watercooling solution for non reference design 4870's btw so let us know? :)

You think I could do a silent 4870 1gb with a S1, 4870x2 and oc i7 in my HAF? That would be sweeeeeeeet!

lol do you mean could you cool a 4870 1gb silent with an S1, to that question yes easily, 120 fans are so quiet now compared to stock fans.

Did you then say could you run a 4870x2 in the same setup, im not sure on that one, it depends on the architecture, i cant be sure on that one, i know only the gpu is used in crossfire.

But yh im sure all of this would fit in a HAF 32 and keep cool at that
