I say a modified option 2 is the best bet. buy 3 4850's, put two in system one, one in system 2, move the 3870 to system 3, and sell both 1950's.

Hey Wile E :toast:

My daughter doesnt do any hardcore gaming. Mostly Emulators. The x800 is 'just a touch' to slow. I know the 1950pro did well with the emus so that looked like a good choice for her.

I can't do 3 4850s right now so that was out. I was thinking they were $109 for some reason. :rolleyes:

I'm damn curious what 3 4850s would have done. :ohwell:

I -might- be able to fix my other 3870. If I can I'll be able to keep a 3870x2+3870 in system1, put the other 3870 in system2, put one 1950 in system3, and sell the other 1950. I think that's the best performance/price for me while making good use of the hand me downs.

The ASUS HD 4830's can clock to 700mhz easy which puts them ahaid of the HD 4850's.

I cant find a 4830 single slot. Any suggestions?

EDIT - I'll need one like this to run 3 of them. How well will that single cooler keep it cool at 700mhz?

What i wanted to say here was that the 160 shaders difference still remains when u compare 2 4830s and 2 4850s.And u get the 4830s for anout 210-220 euros here and the 4850s for 280 euros.And keeping in mind that u can oc even more,it s only a matter of:ARE THE 320 SHADERS MORE WORTHY OF 60 EUROS.Thats all.I think they are.
Only con of the 4850s the cooling that favors 4830s...

a quick newegg search is $110 vs. $155.

2x 4850 = $310
3x 4830 = $330

It's really a tough call. Just because I -can- put in 3 cards was in no way saying it was the best option. It was only something to consider. I'd be running 8x 8x 4x also. Between missing shaders and one of them on a 4x slot I think it'll hurt me in the end. Not to mention I can't find a single slot 4830 anyways.

I made the mistake in the past buying the lower series of 1950s, the 1950pro. I should have got the 1950xtx.

2 4850s kick ass in general.The only thing that worries me is the 8x-8x config.I hope u dont run into reduced performance there.
2 4830s kick ass too but a little "more gently";P
Its just that if u had an x38 or x48 board u would be perfect...But anyway try the 4850s!!!

My 3870x2 showed up today (thanks mlee49) and is working. Only scored a 16,979 in 06 though. Only ~4000 more then a single. Anyways... I tried to add my 3870 but I have no crossfire option in CCC. Any ideas?

Completely clean the drivers, then reinstall. I had issues adding the 4870 to my setup. the only thing that fixed it was uninstalling, running a driver cleaner, then reinstalling. I also have troubles with anything past the 8.11 drivers, but I'm not sure that's the same case with the 3870's.

Ok I FINALLY (!%!#$%^!#$) got Vista installed. Crossfire is selectable but CCC isn't showing the single 3870 and the benchmarks are no different (other then being slower because of Vista).

Any other advice or ideas?

The newest off ATIs site. (I refuse to call them AMD lol) Driver is 9.1. Under CCC's Information center>graphics hardware I see 3 cards.
Primary adapter-3870x2
Linked adapter-3870x2
Disabled adapter-3870
Device Manager shows 3 cards as well. 2 3870x2s and one 3870 (3800 series). No issues there. I have a crossfire checkbox but is that to link the 2 3870x2 gpus or to link the 3870x2 with the 3870? I know when I uncheck it my 3d image goes to hell like a sync problem or something.

I really hate having all this "high end" hardware and it's all for nothing because companies can't code a driver to save their ass. Reminds me of Havok. Another advertised feature that didn't work.

Try the 8.11 or 8.10 drivers. I seem to have the most success with those.

Apperently it is linked now. The 3870 shows as a Linked adapter. My tri-fire setup in Vista gets about the same score as a single 3870x2 did in XP. :banghead:

You just can't can't get ahead. Run XP and you can't run 3 gpus. Use Vista and you NEED 3 gpus to get 2gpu performance. ME :slap:

I have another funny issue with that crossfire check box. Every time I check or uncheck it my monitors get swapped. 1 becomes 2 and visa-versa.
