4870 GPU Utilization

Hey

I recently bought a Radeon 4870 , no problems thus far, drivers need updating though .

Anyway, i just noticed that the GPU isn't being fully utilized when gaming, it is maxed at 60% ish according to GPU-Z, i've taken a screen of GPU-Z showing it after playing SC:FA for a good hour:

Is this just lack of driver maturity, or is it my CPU is letting it down?.

All games play fine/smooth at 19x12, apart from stalker which BSOD's my comp, probably drivers.

Does this happen to everyone or just me?

I'm using a 4850 so I can't relate 100% BUT I think you should try a benchmark program (say Furbenchmark or use CCC to test your clocks or something). See what the load is on the gpu then, I haven't checked in game before but I have seen 100% use before when doing either of those.

Okay I just loaded up Crysis and had GPU-Z running behind it to check for you and mine did in fact reach at least 99% and I've included a screenshot for you.

I'm not sure why yours is not reaching the same level of usage though...I kinda doubt it's your processor since I was only using my Phenom in X2 (Kuma) mode at the time which is just like your dual core X2 Athlon. The usage doesn't change whether I'm running on two cores or all four cores so perhaps it's something else.

Thanks for reading guy's, ill just wait for the next set of catalyst's, i mean it isn't showing in games as all the games i run are fine, apart from the aforementioned stalker, time will tell

Which cats are you using? I'm using the hotfix version of the 8.6's...the new 8.7's should be out really soon though.

Did you try the hotfix 8.6's they are about a million times better than the standard 8.6 drivers!

I highly doubt it right now he's using the wrong drivers is more like it.

I would assume its just like a cpu it wont be 100% utilized unless the task requires it, so only a very hard game like crysis would maybe max out the card with a cpu fast enough to keep up.

I also ran a few other games and it appears that though it's just like your cpu utilization would be. Dependant on what you're asking it to do it'll change it's usage percent accordingly. If I ran GTR2 with 16 cars and all the bells and whistles it would barely get over 69% but if I added 100% rain and made the race at 23:00hrs then the usage would finally reach 99% but only in certain circumstanes and even then it was fairly brief.

But, I'd still switch those drivers out for the hotfix version as they're infinitely better.

Yep it does appear to depend on what is on screen, just ran Eve-Online at 19x12, HDR, 24xAA, 16xAF during a fight and actually maxed it out , this card is beast still had over 70FPS :
