Hi,
Im just wondering if there is a fix or software patch for the 4870x2 or any ATI dual gpu card when it comes to "physx" :nutkick: ?
Because i know that nvidia aquired it in feb 08 and have not made it open source..(bloody nvidiots!)..which means no ati crossfire or dual gpu card support by the looks of things, due to the fact that every game i play that uses this fail of a database causes my card to overheat and do a saftey shutdown. My most recent encounters of this are "Bionic commando", "trine" and "mirrors edge" :banghead:.

so if someone can point me in the right direction that would be tops:D

you dont get physx acceleration on ATI cards (never have), but it cant cause your cards to overheat.

i'd be looking at your PSU crapping out, or your cards outright overheating (or something else related, ram/NB overheating)

Thanks Mussels and I would tend to agree with you but for the fact I can run street fighter IV maxed as well as fallout 3 ,farcry 2, red alert 3, spore, demigod, stranglehold, rainbow 6,battle station pacific, sins:entrenchment, assasins creed and age of pirates 2 to name a few without any overheating, black screens, blue screens, restarts etc...

I watch ccc(9.6) overclocking options (I runs the fan at 55% just to be on the safe side) and no joy  the temp climbs at like 1 degree every 30 seconds till it goes to max and saftey shuts down and the activity is only like at 15% the whole time so it kinda makes no sense.

So im still convinced it is the physx due to the fact that they install it when they install the games(trine, bionic commando and mirrors edge) ,but im upgrading the existing 4870x2 with a arctic accelero coolerin a few days and wacking a second 4870x2 with one attached in there cause I know the stock cooler is crappy (just to rule the cooler possibility out once and for all). My mobo is not clutterd so I dont think its the north bridge, cpu is well below 62 degrees (46 degrees when stressed) and PSU is new and running fine (900watts) oh and ram has heat sinks and thermaltake cyclo cooler on it so no worries there.

As I said before don't think its hardware related but I will post again when I have done the gpu cooler install.

it simply cant be physx, because it has no way to tie in to your video card - there is ZERO interaction between the two.

I have seen reports of trine causing overheating with x2 cards, it makes me wonder if theres something wrong with the fan speeds in certain games (unrelated to physx, just a general bug)

Lol @ rojidoji.....:nutkick:

This has absolutely nothing to do with Physx.

4870X2's get hot, it happens. Your problems should be fixed with the new cooler.

no PhysX on ATI, no need for it, it will be dead when intel, wops i mean HAVOK goes to bed with AMD and smack nvidia ass ;P

HAVOK is used by 99.99% of all games, the rest is PhysX ;p
there isnt many games that support PhysX, allmost all of them suck

the problem will be fixed when you clean up the dust in the fans and what about better airflow?
new cooler from arctic cooling is also good atleast if you are overclocking

and yes DrPepper agree, PhysX is on CPU on ATI cards, so check CPU temp and clean those fans to :)

Leave the fan speed at auto because if its fixed at 55% then it wont get faster as the card gets hotter thus causing it to overheat. It isn't physx causing your card to overheat at all.

Honestly, those that await with hope and an ever increasing sense of excitement that havok will be finally be made available by ATi across all their most recent GPU's and be several times more efficient (and better) than Physx have much more patience than me, are those of you aware that ATI announced havok in 2005? thats like 4 years and where are we now, it's very easy to criticise the green side for much, but wheteher you like Physx or not, it's here and has been for some time, yes only about 5-10% of games support it but it's here, real, now..... in my experience many with NVidia cards quite like it......most with ATi cards dont,...... now I wonder why that might be?

WRONG.

i have done it myself.

not with ATI directly but the OP's setup should work in theory as it did for me when i tested it.

you can run ATI for video and use nvidia for dedicated physx while running windows 7.

however, in my testing, 4870x2 + physx would not work unless a 3rd/4th ati gpu was present for xfire.

have a look see.... http://forums.techpowerup.com/showthread.php?t=72035

you mistook what i wrote fitseries - i did not say you couldnt run a physx card and an ATI card at the same time.

i said you cant run physx ON an ATI card - the OP is talking about physx games on an ATI card, with no seperate Nvidia or Physx card.

Edit to clarify: The OP has not asked a single question about an nvidia or ageia physX card - he has just made an assumption that games WITH the physX engine are overheating his cards.

Ok.... so to round up:
1) It is not physx that is overheating my card but 3 games that utilize physx.
2) Ran another test with fan at 100% (on trine and mirrors edge) despite the uber noise, 1 degree rise per min till overheat (so only delayed it not stopped it).
3) Have not yet installed any after market cooling on teh card (soon to be cards ,like tommorow or the next day)
4) I apologize for any misunderestemations but teh cake is a lie.

5) System is near new so no dust acumulation.

6) Will post on results of new card plus after market coolidge(and maybe give screenies for further wild accusations).

are you sure both fans are spinning up? (if it has more than one?)

I have definately read of x2 issues with trine causing this problem on their forums, but if all fans are running at full speed i just cant understand HOW its still heating up

Ok.... so to round up:

Same here

Just wanted to chime in that I have two 4850s in crossfire configuration. This has worked great for any number of really graphic intensive games. Just started playing Trine and it kept crashing the PC. I quit before a crash and check my catalyst control panel and my temps were north of 110, well into the red zone on the dial.

Could it be that because I don't have Physx that it leans heavier on the video cards for processing the effects, pushing them past their limits?

Temps are acceptable in every other game i've tried, even playing for hours. Trine I only get about 10 minutes, and my fans spin up louder then any other game I play.
