For the first time ever from me - 4K benchmarks. This year purchasing a Sony X800D TV (mostly for movies) and having used all the above mentioned video cards i have decided to showcase a scenario if any of these cards is actually worthy of being called "4K capable" or are they just pretenders and wanabes...
The contenders
Powercolor Radeon RX Vega 56 OC
Asus GeForce GTX980 Ti Strix OC
Asus GeForce GTX1070 Strix OC
Evga GeForce GTX1080 SC
For a detailed info how RX Vega 56 works in my computer click THIS thread. I called RX Vega OC, because the boost clock is 119 MHz higher than what is supposed to be according to the vendor info, even though the design is reference.
There are two objectives in this test:
1. GTX980 Ti vs. GTX1070 - which card is faster at 4K?
In my PREVIOUS BENCHMARK i showed to the world that the same brand Asus Strix GTX980 Ti is 4 % faster than Asus Strix GTX1070. While this difference was not big, GTX980 Ti was faster in every game constantly. Having that knowledge in mind i dared to ask myself if 6 GB VRAM buffer would somehow cripple GTX980 Ti compared against 8 GB VRAM buffer on GTX1070 when testing at 4K - if there is any resolution in which GTX1070 might prove itself, it has to be 4K.
2. GTX1080 vs. RX Vega 56 - which card is faster at 4K at the same price point?
Exactly! Cheapest RX Vega 56 costs the same as cheapest GTX1080 in my country, never mind the very different US prices, those in Europe are at approx 530 EU. Also this RX Vega 56 card that i obtained, as mentioned, comes with higher (1590 MHz) than usual (1471 MHz) core boost clock speed.

For this test i will be using 3840x2160 resolution provided by Sony TV, all settings set max, no anti-aliasing. I did not update NVIDIA driver to the latest, since i obtained GTX1080 way later than GTX980 Ti and GTX1070, so i wanted to make sure all NVIDIA cards were tested using the same software.
Let's begin!
ALIEN ISOLATION
Not a demanding game by all means, a GTX1060 6 GB would be fine here.
ASSASSIN'S CREED SYNDICATE
What a slag! However, since this is third person perspective game, you can enjoy it even at 40 FPS, unlike first person shooters, who really need that constant 60 FPS, so GTX1080 is the only suitable card to play Assassin's Creed.
BATTLEFIELD 1
Seems GTX 1080 and RX Vega 56 are truly 4K capable in Battlefield 1 delivering smooth gameplay. GTX980 Ti and GTX1070, though 4K capable, do not deliver smooth gameplay.
CALL OF DUTY BLACK OPS 3
This is the only victory for RX Vega 56 and with GTX1080 being close behind you can somehow play this game with these cards at 4K resolution decently enjoying it. GTX980 Ti and GTX1070 are not 4K worthy.
CRYSIS 3
Did you really expect something else? HD7970 GHz Edition was the first ever GPU to break 60 FPS barrier in Crysis Warhead frost bench at 1920X1080 with 4X MSAA. When will be a card that can break Crysis 3 60 FPS barrier at 3820X2160 with 4X MSAA? Not soon that's for sure...
DEUS EX MANKIND DIVIDED
It's sad to see that non of the cards can break 50 FPS, so i really would not recommend any of these cards for smooth 4K gameplay, also having in mind this scene is not really all that demanding compared to what may come.
DOOM
I would only recommend GTX1080 for smooth 4K gameplay in Doom. RX Vega 56 also only works with OpenGL API, as selecting Vulkan just crashes the game. The same can not be said about any NVIDIA card... With that in mind, RX Vega 56 delivers very poor performance here.
DRAGON AGE INQUISITION
WTF? This puts RX Vega 56 in a dire situation when the final performance summary will be drawn, but i can not discount this test, it's not a fluke, the same low ass result was noted with newer AMD 17.10.2 beta drivers. Also testing at 2560X1440 the RX Vega 56 was also significantly slower than anything else, so...
FAR CRY 4
A precision shooter needs as much FPS as possible in order to never fall below 60. That said, nothing but GTX1080 can be recommended for at least a decent 4K gameplay in Far Cry 4.
MAD MAX FURY ROAD
All cards are 4K certified for this game.
MASS EFFECT ANDROMEDA
The game can lag much more than this. I am not sure if even GTX1080 Ti can handle this game at 4K.
METRO LAST LIGHT REDUX
For a shooter with lots of aiming you want your FPS to be a constant 60, and there are certainly more laggy places than this one, so GTX1080 is the only logical choice for smooth 4K gameplay, though other cards are 4K worthy too at least decently as all break 50 FPS...
MIDDLE EARTH SHADOW OF MORDOR
High minimal frame rates of RX Vega 56 and GTX1080 would definitely target these cards for 4K gaming in Shadow of Mordor, even though GTX1070 and GTX980 Ti are perfectly fine too.
PREY
All cards can handle 4K in Prey, but GTX1080 seems like the only logical choice for a smooth 4K gameplay.
PROJECT CARS
The game is perfectly fine to play at 4K even at 30 FPS, since this is a car simulator.
RISE OF TOMB RAIDER
There will be more laggy places than this intro, so non of the cards is recommended for 4K, especially given the fact that GTX980 Ti is not far from GTX1080.
SNIPER ELITE 4
This game needs constant 60 FPS more than any other game due to it's super precise aiming nature. I could not think of any other shooter in history that would need more constant FPS flow than this one. Sudden 10 FPS drop from 60 to 50 FPS can result in missed shot from 300 meter distance where every centimeter counts. GTX1080 does not guarantee 60 FPS throughout the whole game either. Forget smooth 4K with the cards below GTX1080 or suffer the horrible consequences of missing yours shots when there are explosions and dozens of enemies at the same time/place.
WATCH DOGS 2
Abysmal performance was expected anyway... If you want to play at 4K with at least GTX1080, use temporal filtering AA method, which actually improves performance.
WITCHER 3 WILD HUNT
Non of these are 4K cards, but GTX1080 at least makes Witcher 3 comfortable at 4K as the game does not need the precision of a gun based shooter like Crysis 3.

AVERAGE FPS PERFORMANCE SUMMARY
As far as things go between GTX980 Ti and GTX1070, nothing really changes at 3840X2160 compared from 2560X1440. 6 GB VRAM is enough for 4K gaming without AA and biger memory bandwidth of GTX980 Ti is what really maters here.
As far things go between RX Vega 56 OC and GTX1080 SC... Wait.. What? Ok, the reality is that RX Vega 56 OC is only GTX1070 Strix OC equal. It's fair to say it is inferior to GTX980 Ti Strix OC and it has got nothing on GTX1080 SC. Sure, had not RX Vega 56 scored so low in Dragon Age Inquisition game, it would have been between GTX1070 and GTX980 Ti. Even more bitter the feeling get's imagining what if RX Vega 56 had used it's full 1590 MHz core boost clock at all times without bullshit throttling? That would probably lead it ahead of GTX980 Ti, but it is only speculation.
AMD has ALOT of work to do.
