5700 XT artifacts and BSOD after cpu/mobo upgrade

Hi forum

Does anyone know what the issue could be here?

I got my Gigabyte 5700 XT gaming OC card around 6 weeks ago and put it in my intel system (4690k / z97-m plus) and it worked great until I upgraded to the 3700x / Prime X470-Pro around 3 days ago.

Now I am getting random artifacts on the screen whilst just moving the mouse on the desktop or within a few seconds whilst running Furmark. Sometimes it artifacts and crashes the driver with BSOD error Video_TDR_failure and sometimes the system just reboots.

I have installed a fresh copy of Windows 10 and have tried to remove drivers with DDU and AMD cleanup utility and then installed the latest drivers but the issue still remains.

My system:

3700x
Prime x470-pro
Gigabyte 5700 XT Gaming OC
Corsair RM 650W Gold
1TB WD ssd
HyperX Fury 16GB 3200mhz ram

Everything is at stock settings.

The artifacting happens towards the end of the video. GPU temperature doesn't exceed 65C.

Here's some pics of the issue...

Well Furmark isn’t the best thing to use for any kind of testing. It’s puts a very Unrealistic high load on cards so not surprised your eventually getting artifacts under the amount of stress Furmark puts on a card. I would go as far as saying you could possibly damage your card using it

I only used Furmark after I started to get the artifacts yesterday and have only ran it for 2 minutes maximum, so I doubt it would have done any damage. GPU temp didn't go above 65C.

You can try other synthetics for testing GPU functionality like UnigineHeavenBenchmark or Superposition. Stay clear of Furmark.

Anyway, to the issue. You can try to monitor your GPU with GPU-Z sensors tab or the entire system, including GPU with HWiNFO64 sensors mode for unusual readings (speed, temp, voltages) for GPU, VRAM, VRs etc...

Try older versions of GPU drivers, prior to the latest RX6000series. Unistall/Install in safe mode with DDU.
Have the latest for chipset drivers straight from AMD site and not board vendor.

If you’ve tried the methods above but the problem still occurring, you may need to replace the file in atikmpag.sys or atikmdag.sy (which is listed in your blue screen error).

1) Download the latest version of ATI/AMD graphics card driver first.

2) Follow the path C:\Windows\System32\drivers and locate the atikmdag.sys (or atikmpag.sys) file. Rename it as atikmdag.sys.old (or atikmpag.sys.old).

It’s important that you change only the one listed in your blue screen error.

3) Go to ATI directory (Usually in C:\ATI) and find the file atikmdag.sy_ or atikmpag.sy_.

Copy the file to your desktop.

If you can’t find it in this folder, try typing the name of the file into the search box in the Start panel.

3) On your keyboard, press the Windows logo key. Type cmd and right click and run Command Prompt (as administrator).

4) Type chdir desktop and press Enter to change the directory to your Desktop.

5) Type expand.exe atikmdag.sy_ atikmdag.sys and press Enter.

Or, type in expand -r atikmdag.sy_ atikmdag.sys and press Enter.

6) When the expansion is complete, copy the new atikmdag.sys file from your Desktop to C:\Windows\System32\Drivers.

Thanks for that Zach_01. I'll give it a go after work. Looks promising.

I've tried uninstalling the graphics drivers in safe mode with AMD cleanup utility and DDU and have tried older drivers but the problem still persisted. I'll give the last option a go.
