Ok.. So I have my Visa in hand. I have a 5800X in my cart. I own a 5600X and a 3600XT.. both are for sale right now..

Should I get the 5800X? I know in the end its my decision.. do you think the extra bump is worth my trouble?

I will probably lose a little on the CPU sales.. and I am ok with it, mostly.

I don't really need it, but.. I do kind of want it..

How much is the 5800X, and how much do you expect to recoup from the sale of your 5600X?

If you need more cores than the 5600X, yes.
If you are just gaming and expect to replace the CPU in the next 2-3 years anyway, no; just de-list the 5600X and use that.

I bought a 5800X just because I could find it easily when the 5600X was hard to source. I have a pretty mixed workload and I'm not usually rendering on this machine so there's no need for 8C/16T at the moment. The main advantage for me was Zen3's IPC boost over Zen2 and you already have that with your 5600X.

I paid 450 for the 5600X, so I have it listed for 400, will take 375 lowest. The 5800X is 650 with tax, but will go up shortly as sales tax will be added for my province next month I believe.. so I could save a few bucks at this price. But you are right.. I rarely do any transcoding anymore. I saw it was in stock at less than retail for once lol.. maybe I will just delist what I have up right now.

Thanks for popping in

400 Euro is 597 beaver bucks.

I really don't! I just want another new toy..

And I did feel silly for making a thread about it.

What I really want is a new GPU. Not happening though.

Sounds like you end up paying $250 for two more cores that you don't currently have a use for, and as a bonus you have to deal with the hassle of removing, selling and replacing a CPU that you currently have working perfectly in your system.

I know a deal when I see it, and this ain't one of them. If you're hankering for some hassle and have money burning a hole in your pocket, try igniting the money. That will provide the thrill of risk and danger whilst simultaneously lightening your wallet! :D

Yes that is very true. I was hoping for a little more clock speed out of the deal. Its like there is a hard lock on this board that wont let me go over 4600 in a stable fashion. 4700 stable is a no go. I can go up to 4900 no problem all core, but the power just isn't there to back it. And using curve optimizer only allows 200MHz. I was thinking maybe AMD didn't want people to clock the shit out of their baby CPU's.

I don't know. I'm looking for loopholes that don't exist.

Maybe wait a bit more? There could be discounts around the corner. It's not like you need it right now.

You could try another board then - that's something to throw your $250 at....

I haven't tried the 5800X in a B550 - still using the old (and kind of jank) Aorus X570.

The 5800X is only faster by a small margin in gaming so i would say it isn't worth it...... I got mine for about $50 out of pocket so it was a no brainer and even when I get a 5950X it's gonna be used in a different system....

I spent about 10 hours on a 5600X system after building it to me it more than fast enough for gaming unless you are going 3090/4090/6900XT/7900XT at some point because who cares about value at that point.

Thanks buddy!

I took my ads down.

Not sure what got into me there.. I saw it was in stock last night and had an instant hard on for it. Normally I would be ok.. just had the itch..

Edit:

Might as well buy a board for my boy then.. so he doesn't have to use my ancient Intel systems anymore..

Might get m/atx for me and give him this board hmmmm

Noooooo. Please do not buy the 5800X if already own a 5600X and your FCLK can reach 1900mhz...I hope. Ryzen 4 (I understand) is due to come out later this year. New socket AM5 also. I would 100% wait. I own the 5800X and came from a 3600 CPU which reaches 4.5 @1.35v and FCLK 1900mhz so my RAM is set also at 3800Mhz with tight timings and I do not notice the difference in games with my new RX 6700 XT at 1440p. Save the bucks for the really good stuff coming up :) Just my 2 cents.

As fun as the 5800X has been to mess around with I agree stick with the 5600X like I said before..... Also Even at 720p there is no difference past 3600 14-14-14-14-28-42-260 with tight sub timings unless 1-2% gets you hard.... AIDA is cool but mostly pointless for real world performance differences.... Maybe in 2x8 config there would be but not in 4x8....

Have you checked in HWinfo for any WHEA while running FCLK at 2000mhz under a load? Mine seemed stable. Passed Prime small FFT's, Cinebench R23. No issues there. But I kept getting windows hardware errors, which I noticed while in games because I would get these huge stutters. No matter what I did, it just did not like 2000Mhz FCLK.

At that price no. The 5600X you purchased was close to MSRP, that 5800X pricing though is too high.

I can understand why you'd want a 5800X. The 5600X is a slight compromise in terms of gaming and multi-threaded performance but it's unlikely to much of an impact on your day to day. I'd only purchase at that price if you use the PC for work and need every bit of performance.

None for about 2 weeks now if I try to lower trfc any lower I have issues but it seems to be a 4 dimm thing because with 2x8 it seems like it has no problem in the 250 range but I get lower performance.... Also I'm limited to 1.5v due to temps while gaming getting uber close to 50c.

On some of the previous bios I couldn't even get 3800/1900 to boot.

A lot of margin of error stuff but I only test forza horizon 4/Gears 5/Gears 4/SOTTR at 720p to check for differences..... Maybe with a 3090/6900XT I'd see some gains but 720p is pretty synthetic as it is.

Actually 4000/1000 isn't much slower than 3600/1800 with tight timings though as well.

I actually game at 1440p though so even 3200 14-14-14-14-28-40-225 is good enough as long as it's 4x8.... I've noticed larger gains going from 2x8 to 4x8 than going from 3200-4000 assuming all timings are equal. 3200 4x8 is similar to 3600 2x8 for me.... Although other than for my own personal benefit my testing doesn't mean a whole lot.

Out of the 3 5800X I've worked with this is the only one that could do 4000/2000 neither the 5600X or 5900X I've worked with could either.... I couldn't even get the 5600X past 3600/1800.... All decent bdie kits
