hi all, considering upgrading to the 5800x3d from my ryzen 5 3600, but have a couple of queries :)

Specs are listed , will it be a noticeable difference in gaming over what i have already, considering the specs i have, just doing the CPU to prolong the system another few yrs.

Is my PSU enough ? Corsair TX650 gold.

i have tried a few PSU calculators and had 3 different answers lol

1 said a 450w is enough, another said a 650w is ok and another said i need a 750w?
Slightly confused to say the least.

any help gratefully recieved.

Probably will be a noticeable difference if you are primarily gaming. I think 650 watt will be fine.

However, it is worth noting that from a google search I just made, it appears that the B450 Tomahawk Max has mixed results with the 5800X3D such as the processor not reaching full clock speeds, so you will want to look into that specifically and see if any subsequent bios revisions have fixed it before making a purchase. Try to see if anyone else has that same board and the 5800X3D, I would recommend asking on reddit.com/r/amd.

Nvm the power psu deal.

Can you cool the darn chip should be what you're asking. I think your cooler will be put to the test for sure!

The 3060Ti will top out at around 260w, while a stock 5800X3D draws about 120w when fully loaded. You are fine in the PSU department.

But your cooler will struggle to keep the CPU under 90c when stressed. However, this can be easily remedied by tweaking the 5800X3D to use less power.

You will get that smile that compelling hardware brings after you install it by upgrading from a 3600 to 5800X3D for Gaming. A TX650 is more than enough for that rig.

The cooler doesn't really matter. 5800X3D uses around 60-70W in gaming, the bottleneck is thermal transfer.

You'll see much more stable framerates, and be GPU limited 90%+ of the time.

Thanks had a bit of a read and i think i should be good, im on latest bios 1.2.0.7, seems ppl having problems were on versions prior to 1.2.0.6 (which was the min rec bios for the 5800x3d)

probably about right then, never seen my 3060ti go over around 245w so far, i'll see how it goes cpu cooling wise and if needed ill have to pick up an AIO maybe.
But i dont really do anything really stressful cpu wise, just gaming.

Thats what i was hoping for really, at least ill get the most out of the system with luck :)

Thanks all for your replies, most helpful.

Randomly encountered this thread and here's my 2 cents.

I have a pretty similar config, IIRC the clock speed while gaming is 4450MHz (can do a double check later).

In a super heavy all-core workload like CB R20, on my config with default BIOS settings it would still instantly throttle. If you worry about that, be sure that after you installed your new CPU, clear BIOS settings, and enable MSI Kombustor. (not sure which level is best, I just set it to level 3, checked that CB R20 topped at ~85C, and forget it.)

Considering under most gaming loads the 5800X3D should pull at most 75W I would guess that single tower cooler is fine as long as you have good airflow in your case. My brother got into some trouble with his dreaded NZXT H500 and 3080. An NH-U12A can't save his new 5800X3D (pulling only 75W) from throttling while playing Forza Horizon 5.

Edit: At worst your CPU would be slightly throttled. If you do have the budget and the question is buy or not, just do it.

this is a 140mm twin fan single tower, gets better results than most standard tower coolers, and in a excellent airflow case, so im hopeful itll be ok for gaming, not to botheedr about benchmarking other than to check its working ok. long is its good while gaming ill manage.

I'd try it. Its probably adequate.

Yes you should be fine with a Corsair 650W for a 5800X3D and a 3060ti. Also the 5800X3D will be a great upgrade for gaming over your 3600. It even beats out the 5900X and 5950X in gaming. It's a beast of an 8 core cpu. Grab one while you can.

Thanks for confirming MSI Kombo Strike on the B450 Tomahawk Max. It's the simplest way to reduce power consumption and load temperatures on the 5800X3D. MSI motherboard owners are privilaged here, other users will have to rely on a third party software tool PBO2 Tuner.

Oops, my bad, wrong Kombo thing. Can't edit anymore.

That thing is surprisingly not so much on power consumption (on CB R20, ~112W vs ~120W throttled, and some 150 points bonus), but escaping the throttle hell is a big deal.

Total game changer for me when I was told about it. I was also given some clarification on it. It’s basically Curve Optimzer. 3 levels that equal -10 -20 and -30 equivalent of CO. Happily running Level 3 with great temps and good MT scores to boot.
