Hey guys :)

So after about a year of me telling him to replace his shitty laptop, my friend has finally decided to get a new gaming desktop. Coincidentally, his laptop actually fully died earlier today, so hey, good timing I guess :p

Anyway, he wants two monitors, but he will only game on one and use the other while text editing, programming etc. His goal is to spend about 600-800 euros on the build excluding monitors, OS, keyboard mouse etc. However, he can spend more than that, it's just that he aims to not spend too much money :p

He asked me for advice, but since I've only ever built my own current system, I thought I'd ask you guys for some advice myself. Since he'll be gaming at 1080p, I was thinking about maybe an Intel Core i5-6xxx, H170 mobo, 8GB RAM, R9 380 2GB, 250GB SSD and 1 or 2 TB HDD, and some 500W or so PSU. However, I don't really have an idea about the specifics and the monitors...

So what can you guys come up with? Thanks in advance!

Sorry, forgot to mention, we're from the Netherlands. We will probably be ordering from afuture.nl, since it's the cheapest and also very customer friendly.

Ah ok - just though so because of your PCGH RAM.

Partpicker stoped responding for me so I just took a screenshoot:

remarks:
  • go for 4GB VRAM even at 1920x1080 (computerbase.de did a good comparison on this one recently - link)
  • you can shave of a few € by - switching to the i5-6400 and H170. I just went with Z170 and Asrock because the offer that OC thingy for locked CPUs. The CPU cooler ... I hate this fucking POS Intel boxed thing, therefore I went with a great budget option (review here on TPU) that even beats the 212 Hyper Evo.
  • The PSU is solid middle class with 5 years warrenty and semi modular - review on HARDOCP. It can even power a 290(X) together with that platform, so your friend has some room to grow in the future. Though I prefer a Seasonic PSU over pretty much anything else (Seasonic G-550 for example), but for better quality you have to pay a few € more ofc.
  • the HDD is a single platter design - less mechanical parts that can fail. I use the WD Blues myself for years now without real issues.
  • the BX100 SSD is equiped with MLC Nand compared to TLC on the BX200. After Samsungs trouble with the 840s and TLC (the pro was fine) I d stick with MLC for now . The BX is good when it comes to price/performance. On other option would the MX series from Crucial or the 850 Evo from Samsung which uses 3D-TLC NAND in ~30nm, which shouldn't have the problems sub 20nm TLC-NAND has.

Thanks for your suggestions! My friend will definitely not be overclocking though (he's not good with PCs :p), so we will go with H170. Would the ASRock H170 Pro4S be a good choice then?

Thanks for the 2 vs. 4 GB link, did not know that :)
