LOL seriously today I opened a brand new MSI 9800GT only to find no 6-pin PCI-E jack on the back! When did this happen? I'm surprised they are able to run that GPU off bus power. I mean it doesn't even require PCI-E 2.0. Isn't original PCI-E specs like 75 Watt max over the slot? Is this G92 still 55nm? It seems very impressive to run such a big 55nm GPU off 75 Watts or less and yet I never even heard of them doing this. I mean shit my 9600GT even has the 6-pin power requirement!

That's odd....

What company made it? What's the model number? I'm curious myself and wouldn't mind trying to find a little info on it.

I don't remember the model number but it was an MSI 9800GT 512MB DDR3 and we also got an MSI 9600GT 1GB DDR3 that has no PCI-E connector on it either.

The only thing mentioned on the box is the use of newer SSC or Solid State Chokes. I don't see how that alone has made the card so much more efficient. But what do I know about chokes. Nothing actually.

It's a new 9800gt made to compete with the 4670. Nvidia lowered the vcore so it would use less power. They also lowered the core and shader clocks. I believe they call the new card the 9800gt ee (efficiency edition).

the gpu is underclocked over 100mhz. the shaders nearly 300, and the memory 100 to 200

you should be able to overclock the memory to the standard 1900 but since the gpu is undervolted on the powersaving models you might not get that far on the core and shader but you can try

but if you like it then have fun, it uses less power

its the PE (power efficient) but you are correct and most of the GPU's can clock to what the 9800GT originally was at

this would be a great physx card for those of use with not alot of cords left.

I think these underclocked power efficient cards are a way for nV to sell all those dies that failed normal 9800GT speed bin.

Lack of a 6pin connector makes it less attractive though.

well i would get an 8800GT than a 9800GT,exactly the same and the 8 series are legendary cards but if it was like latest drivers i would get 9800GT but if i was going pick graphics card again before i bought 9600GT i'd get an 8800GT much cheaper than 9800GT aswell

that not the issue here these cards need no external power plug.
