A DNS system... plz help for my homework

Hey i need about 10 opinions for an assignment. I dont care if they all agree. if you could take 10 seconds to answer these questions, that would be awesome and very much appreciated.

The DNS server would be for a network of say 100 people for argument, I dont need to get into subnets, or primary and secondary zoning. The information needed isnt that detailed.

If you could answer these questions, that would be awesome:

Would the DNS server be better on Windows Server 2003 or on Linux BIND?

What kind/brand of processor would be necessary?

How much RAM is needed?

Any special hard drive configurations?

What should be a total cost estimate?

dns has an extremely low cpu and memory footprint, you could use an iphone

choice of os comes down to your total cost of ownership. ie do you have linux or windows sysadmins? do you need to hire someone new just for dns management?

also you did not state if that dns should just handle intranet requests or also handle all internet dns requests for your network

I'll throw in my 2 cents to help you out.

If you have no other servers on the network it doesn't matter.
If you do, match it to the other servers. Not necessary, but easier.

Doesn't matter as long as it is capable of running the OS.

How much RAM is needed?

Enough to run the OS. If you need a hard number ... 1GB

Any special hard drive configurations?

No.

What should be a total cost estimate?

Just an estimate ...
For 2003 server standard
Machine ~$1000
OS ~ 900 (I think)

For Linux
Machine ~1000
Everything else is free.

This, or course, does not include any network cabling, switches, routers, modems, etc.

just as a note. its more of an information assignment. not for a computer class. its for a communications at work. we right a report for something we would buy in the workplace.

Hmm I can say I didnt know they had that unlock already out for the iphone (not that I have one). Interesting little tool it is turning out to be.

This might not be directly related, but I love this little configuration tip.
If you want to map an ip to a hostname just go into your hosts file located in C:\Windows\system32\drivers\etc
Great way to map. For example techpowerup to ip 127.0.0.1 (well it helps us app devs out there when moving apps from environment to environment).
