Activision Blizzard Settles With Federal Employment Agency For $18 Million (Updated)

The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission is filing a legal complaint against the company

I've been following this drama since it began. Without a wall of text, the tl,dr is that this started with one person 'mansplaining' to someone else that got offended. Someone eavesdropping on that thought it was ok to do that on an every day basis, so it became a norm in that environment and was never corrected. The CEO and CLO (chief legal officer) both resigned over this.

Someone made a comment somewhere (sorry no source) that this had to do with the recent major changes to WoW that players wanted since release.

Hopefully this is the end of these shenanigans and they can get back to developing again.

So pretty much Kotick/Activision had enough money to buy their way out. Pretty much as expected tbh.

It seems Activision/kotaku played down a lot of the accusations that employees made/reported to make it sound so trivial

It included accusations of drunken harassment of female employees by male colleagues or supervisors, a culture of ignoring complaints and retaliation against women who made them, and widespread discrimination against women in areas such as equal pay and promotion opportunity.

The suit claims that one female employee committed suicide while on a company trip with a male supervisor. The suicide occurred after coworkers passed around nude photos of her at a company holiday party.

The suit writes that female employees are subjected to “cube crawls” in which male employees “drink copious amounts of alcohol as they crawl their way through various cubicles in the office and often engage in inappropriate behavior toward female employees.”

For example, former World of Warcraft Senior Creative Director Alex Afrasiabi repeatedly hit on and groped female employees during company events like BlizzCon. He did this in plain view of male employees who had to pull him off the female employees. He also made derogatory comments toward female employees.

His suite at the hotel was nicknamed the “Crosby Suite” after previously convicted rapist Bill Cosby.
