Advice on likely PSU or mobo problem

Hi all, interesting problem for you. This isn't a new build, rather one I did last December, but I have a recurring, annoying problem that I think this forum would be best placed to give advice on. First, the build:

Ryzen 5800X
Gigabyte 3090 Eagle OC
Asus ROG STRIX B550-F Gaming
2x16GB Corsair Vengeance LPX 3600MHz DDR4
BeQuiet Dark Power Pro P10 850W 80Plus Platinum
Win 10 Home 20H2
Valve Index VR headset

This is a good set of components and I'm very happy with its performance. However... in certain circumstances the machine hard powers off completely, like the power lead had just been yanked out. It's then completely dead (on/off switch does nothing) until I open it up, pull out the ATX power cable to the mobo and then reseat it. Only then will it restart, with no obvious ill effects. Googling around, this might be a way of draining the mobo capacitors and properly 'resetting' everything.

The hard power offs always occur when gaming, but only in certain games. I've had it in Doom 2016 and Subnautica BZ, but in random places. It happens more often in certain VR games and here it is reproducible - launching Google Earth VR will immediately cut the power as will starting a VR flight in MSFS (but not starting VR mode in the menus, that works fine, it's starting a flight that kills it). Most other VR games are fine - have played through Alyx multiple times with settings cranked up and not seen this once.

This sounds like a power delivery problem. My PSU is good quality, but is 850W sufficient for my GPU? It should be... Could it be a problem on the mobo? Would upgrading to a X570 with better power regulation help? The problem is I'm loathe to spend a whole bunch (more!) money replacing expensive components when I don't know what the problem is. What I find curious is that I can make this happen by firing up Google Earth VR from desktop. This tells me it's not heat related, as the CPU/GPU wouldn't have time to get hot. Also the power offs don't occur in demanding games (Cyberpunk 2077 runs in 4k with all raytracing on just fine) so it's not a problem with power availability, as everything can run at max power draw just fine for hours. The only thing I can think of is some kind of power surge that certain software conditions create which trips some safety switch somewhere. Or there is a weird fault with one of my components.

Would it help to run some kind of system logger and then engineer one of the power offs?

Thanks in advance for anyone who replies with advice!

The 3090 can have transient spikes above 500w likely triggering the ocp on the psu. The easiest thing to try is a quality 1000w psu with a good return policy. My 850w seasonic titanium psu handles a 5950x/3080ti fine but I've never seen more than 650w peak usage at the plug using a wattage meter.

Thanks for quick response. Would a system logger pick that up? Or would it be too sudden to capture it? I think loggers poll every 1s at best.

System logger should record the event. Very much interested in your problem.

Have you manually OC'ed your CPU and/or your 3090? Going by BeQuiet's PSU calculator, you should be fine with 850 watts for your system, if you do not OC it. If you OC it, the PSU calculator says you need a 1000 watt PSU. Yes, I know PSU calculators aren't 100% accurate, but it is a starting point.

Stock speeds on both CPU and GPU. I have the RAM running at DOCP values, but I can't imagine that will be the problem.

this PSU is almost a decade old and my 3090 barely runs on a DP P11 (from 2016, the successor of yours)
100% the PSU.

Maybe I'm running things a little too tight on the PSU then. I'll run a logger and report back, but I expect I'll end up trying a beefier PSU.

if you can get the straight power 11 platinum 1200W for a decent price think about it (i ran two 3090s from it with no issues and it is 100% silent and stable)

Here's a log. I've charted the CPU and GPU power. The first part of the chart is loading the steam VR lobby room. Bit of a delay until I launched GE VR because I had to download it again. It gets as far as the logo and 'building earth' up to 14% then the power dies. There's nothing obvious in the chart to suggest a problem - CPU hovers around 70W, GPU goes up to 320W which is standard for this card. Temps were 66C for CPU and 64C for GPU, so no problem there.

So looks like my best bet is a new PSU. You mentioned the 1200W beQuiet unit. They're difficult to get hold of in the UK right now - Amazon have got it for £290, but that's £80 more than it should be. Can get for £210, but that's for a 15th Sep delivery... The 1000W equivalent is available, would another 150W be enough to be sure?

for a 3090 or 6900XT a 1KW unit is a safe bet.

i'd recommend the Corsair HX series, be quiet straight power, or a seasonic PSU.

the 1000W version is totally fine.

And when you flash 1kw bios on your 3090, you will need a bigger PSU.

mostly CWTs high end platforms with slight modifications.

their PSUs are basically top tier and even their "upper mid tier" is on top of the PSU tier list.

A million likes to all who contributed to this. I took delivery of a 1000W bequiet PSU today, just swapped it out and now GE VR works flawlessly. If that works I'm going to assume the other stuff does too, so the culprit was the PSU. This advice has been extremely useful and has solved a problem that's been bugging me for months, so thanks once again. I've never had a PSU problem in any build I've had previously, but then I've never owned a 3090 before!

Late to the party but you do not need 1,000W to run a 3090. I recommended a 750W Prime to a friend of mines w/ 3090 and it's doing the job just fine. There's a reason why the OCP and OPP points are set rather high on most if not all highend PSUs.

Yes. That's why a 750W Prime is rated for 850-900W and doesn't shutdown until like 950W.
