Hello

Sometimes, randomly, but maybe 3 times a week, suddenly every USB device (Bluetooth adapter therefore mouse too, wireless keyboard, external hard drive if I have it plugged in) stops working and seem to disconnect, complete with the Windows disconnect sound, then after a second all reconnects again, with the Windows connect sound and everything works again, if I have a external HDD drive or USB drive, then Windows detects it connected.

I think this didn't happened before formatting and reinstalling Windows 11, but I don't know if this is coincidential... Only devices I have normally are the Bluetooth adapter (with the mouse linked) and a Logitech receiver for the keyboard. Sometimes I i had a USB drive or external hdd, or a phone.

The computer works normally otherwise.

I don't see anything on the event viewer but I saw 2 events that happened right at the moment but I am not sure if they are related or they may be caused by the USB disconnect-reconnect.

  1. BTHUSB event 18 but this also happens when I reboot
  2. Windows Error reporting event 1001 (Googling says this is BSOD, but I didn't get any BSOD)
    1. EventName LiveKernelEvent
    2. P1: 144
      P2: 100a
      P3: ffff8b874bc747f0
      P4: 0
      P5: 0
      P6: 10_0_22621
      P7: 0_0
      P8: 256_1
      P9:
      P10:

I don't know what could cause it, I some people say it can be PSU (?) issue (but then, the computer doesn't reboot or crash), or USB driver related, I have updated all drivers from Asus website, specially chipset from AMD, but still the same

Thanks for any help

What version is your motherboard's BIOS? Have you tried updating it?

I know older versions of Windows would shut down USB hubs to save power, even on a desktop PC.
Not sure if 11 does the same?

Some of the older AGESA firmware versions had acknowledged problems with USB disconnects. Version 1.2.0.2 was supposed to fix this but there are a lot of anecdotal comments that version didn't fix everything. I'm running AGESA version 1.2.0.7 now and I don't see any USB issues.

Check the ASUS support site for newer BIOS versions; ASUS covers the update procedure in the owners manual.

Best of luck.

Thanks!
I have the latest UEFI (2803 AGESA 1.2.0.7), and drivers, Windows updates.

I checked more about the LiveKernelEvent event via Security and Maintenance (I wasn't a BSOD as I believed) and got this (replaced text strings to English equivalents)

Description
A problem with your hardware caused Windows to stop working correctly.

Problem signature
Problem Event Name: LiveKernelEvent
Code: 144

Parameter 2: ffff8b874bc747f0
Parameter 3: 0
Parameter 4: 0

Product: 256_1
OS Version: 10.0.22621.2.0.0.256.48

Extra information about the problem
Bucket ID: LKD_0x144_CONTEXT_ERROR_AFTER_SET_DEQUEUE_USBXHCI!TelemetryData_CreateReport_VEN_1022_DEV_43ec_REV_0000
Server information: 36c5782d-d5e0-4e68-8d4a-fbe406147654

Checking the "Bucket ID", it mentions something about USB makes me think something is wrong with USB (captain obvious), did anyone got this or something similar?

Could my motherboard be toast?
Thanks!

EDIT: Googling that Bucket ID got some people with the same exact issue (reconnecting USB devices) on Windows 10 and same error, but the very few solutions I saw are so mixed, one says bad CPU or mobo, other talks about deleting some files (I will try that), other says bad PSU as I believed initially, but the majority of those forum threads are unanswered, seems to be a obscure problem...

Maybe it's indeed a motherboard issue :(

If this happened to me, I'd blame Windows 11 since you wrote "I think this didn't happened before formatting and reinstalling Windows 11, but I don't know if this is coincidential..." but who knows? Not sure how much the idea of returning to Windows 10 appeals to you.

Sorry I'm out of suggestions.

Best of luck.

Thanks, I realized I didn't stated I recently installed a M.2 drive (Kingston SNVS250G) at the same time I formatted it, keeping the old SATAs as data drives, but it seems unplausible that a M.2 drive would cause USBs to fail.

Maybe I will try to install Windows 10 on another drive and check it and/or reset UEFI settings, but it seems, based on those few results, that it could be indeed a motherboard or CPU problem :(

Anything else you changed/didn't mention?

If I had this problem, the first thing I would do would be to reseat all cables to the motherboard. Since you were mucking around (changing the m.2) it's possible that something came loose.

No, that's all I can remember (it was 2 months approximately),
I will check it, I did dust the case off too with a electric small blower so it could have dislodged something but I think I did after the issue popped up but I am not sure!

PD: I found someone here (2) Live Kernel Event 144 | TechPowerUp Forums @Chris85 also got the same issue (except in my case isn't during gaming, it happened always while idling or soing simple tasks like browsing or listening to music, in fact it never happened while gaming so far, and games run fine, also here the network card seems to be unaffected), but, again, the thread is unsolved

What are these USB devices plugged into?

The reason I ask is this thread (see comment #23):

If they are all plugged into one USB hub, it could be the hub itself. Like any other piece of PC hardware they can fail.

Thanks again
My Bluetooth and keyboard receivers are both on the back USB ports, but when I use a USB flash drive or external drive, it's on the front USBs and it does disconnect too.
I checked via HWINFO, it seems all those, including the front ports are on the same internal hub. I checked this LKD_0x144_CONTEXT_ERROR_AFTER_SET_DEQUEUE_USBXHCI!TelemetryData_CreateReport_VEN_1022_DEV_43ec_REV_0000 and saw that "43ec" is the first HUB where everything is plugged in

I checked for other USB ports that use the other HUB, so I moved those 2 devices to USB ports of that HUB (on the back) and see if the issue persist or if the problem, if persist, points up to the other HUB

OK removed the bluetooth and see if its the problem, also disabled HCI handof
