AMD 5870 Stuck at 100% fan, temp sensors are wrong - it thinks it is melting. :(

Odd for your card that changing the thermal paste would void the warranty.

the warranty sucks. theres some serious differences between the North America (U.S & Canada) & E.U warranty policies. and one of them is removing the stock cooler voids warranty... Other brands such as HiS and Sapphire run with the same policies.

I've read threads on this and the XFX guy was saying that you can do whatever to the card as far as you don't damage it physically and return it for RMA in its integrity. People were worried about water cooling or third part heatsink and because you need to clean/re-apply the thermal paste it seems like it didn't matter for the warranty.

Now, if you break a seal in order to open your card to reach the GPU, it's another story. You should contact them and ask for more information. ;)

I read and was also told that XFX was cool with anything you did to the card within reason so long as you told them what you were going to be doing first.

I submitted an RMA ticket just to ask about replacing the thermal paste on the cards as they were idling at 53-56'c in my old case. and their answer was just a plain and simple 'no' without really elaborating on it much. I told them i was quite competant at doing such a small task as i had done the same thing a hundred times before on my previous GPUs but they really wouldnt budge.

They even went as far as asking me to RMA the card to them so they could do it.

Ive even heard talk about XFX asking a guy to RMA his graphics card because he wanted the GPU to have a proper clean/dusting and needed to completely dismantle the cooler so he could get and the fins under shroud...

their answer was the same as mine....Send it in for RMA.

theres really no other way to say it but its all double standards.

i initially had dual 3870s then a 5870 in a small case with poor ventilation, they hit 95 , all of them and not Oc'd much, added a 220mm side fan at low speed and they all dropped to 69 loaded with higher Ocs, regardless of the cards fan and cooler , its all about thru case airflow:D

oh and waterblocked mine hits 55gpu 62 Vrms on 1Ghz core and 1.288Volts 24/7:), no fan issues either< smug get yes:rolleyes:

XFX used to have that tact, yes. But they have recently changed thier policies. DO be aware, however, that they do have different policies dependant on where you are located globally.

My guess is that they have been having many RMA's due to flashed BIOSes, and cooler removals, that just didn't need RMA in the first place had they done it instead of the user.

Frankly, I don't mind paying a few $$$ in shipping to get a card fixed, so I have no issues with this seemingly new policy(since I'm sure they should pay for shipping in the uK?). I will also never hesitate to remove a cooler from one of their two 6950 2 GB cards I own now, nor wil l iworry about flashing the BIOS, or anything like that. But I'm in North America.

yeah I forgot to mention that XFX runs two different warranties, one for the North Americas and one of the E.U - Its the E.U one im not happy about as the policies used to be the same as the North Americas before the advent of the AMD 6xxx series of cards.

but you misunderstand me....sending a card to be 'fixed' is different from sending a card to be cleaned or have new thermal paste re-applied. If a GPU needs to be RMA'd, I have no qualms about it, its something that needs to be done. dismantling the cooler to give it a dusting or removing the cooler to re-apply thermal paste doesnt fall in my category as something that needs to be sent off and 'fixed' (not to mention at my own expense) when I am knowledgable and competant enough with a screwdriver, a steady had and the right kind of non-conductive thermal paste ready to have it all done in 5-10mins, not 30days which in my experience seems to be the average going rate when dealing directly with the company instead of going though the shop who may not even stock the same hardware anymore which means that you are left sitting on your ass.

Im aware that there are potentially 2 or 3 partners left that dont shaft the E.U consumer - Asus, MSI & Powercolor (i think...)
