AMD May Also Postpone Launch of 2.4GHz Phenom CPUs

Issues with AMD's new 65nm processors are not only dampening the launch schedule of the highest frequency version Phenom CPU, but may now also affect the 2.4GHz 9700 model as well, according to DigiTimes. Phenom 9500 and 9600 CPUs launched on November 19 at US$251 and US$283, respectively, and AMD was earlier reported to be planning to launch a 9700 model in mid December. However, this schedule is now likely to be pushed back to early 2008. The delay of the higher-end CPUs is not the only disappointment expressed by the industry players as the thermal design power (TDP) of the upcoming 9700 is also drawing concern. Motherboard makers revealed that the 9700 will have a TDP of 125W while the the 2.6GHz 9900 model will have its TDP hit as much as 140W. AMD was unavailable for comment at the time of publication.

Hmm... Mabye processors just aren't AMD's niche anymore? C'mon get to work AMD!! Love the new chipsets btw!
But all in all good! They should make sure it's right before they sell it! I wonder what would happen once they got this CPU fixed and they bumped up the cache a bit?

No you are thinking of the latest RV670 (3870/3850) GPUs.

The TDW seems very high as well for the 9700 given its relatively low clock speed.

I am starting to think that AMD is aceing pooch screwing 101, because they have done it quite a few occasions now. I just hope that they can pull it together.

Meh Intel a few years back was in this position. With the prescotts, even clocked to 8Ghz, if you remember not even beating a stock clocked K8 FX62...

Yeah, but Intel still had the lead in market share. AMD never had such a luxury, so this hurts them much more than it did/would Intel.

granted the 125w is high, but for 4 cores, its really not that bad. I was hoping for lower power draws, but this isnt a death knell for me or preventing me from buying their chips. Also, pushing back the higher end chips, isnt a death knell either.

You also have to realize that AMD and Intel rate their wattage using different methods. It's not directly comparable, but Intel is still winning this round in TDP as well.
