Yup, I have to agree with Crap Daddy here, I don't think Vega has what it takes to dethrone the 1080 Ti (2080?). Then again, I could be wrong, but the leaks don't look very promising, unless they have something truly groundbreaking in their new design.

I'm a die-hard Intel fan, but this round goes to AMD when it comes to CPU's. Ryzen is pretty much unmatched, especially for those of us in distributed computing. GPU's, however, are a different beast and still remain firmly in NVIDIA's hands (not that I have a problem with that, NVIDIA has always been good to me). I'm not even going to mention Volta, which is finalizing development as well, while AMD is just now bringing Vega online. This year is definitely a good year, AMD CPU + NVIDIA GPU = bliss.
I'm going to be optimistic and say AMD is sandbagging. Vega imho is probably going to shock the sh*t out of us, i still believe that we're not being shown the top card in the Vega lineup. AMD did that with Ryzen, I'm gonna go out on a limb here and say they are doing the same with Vega. A few months ago a string showed up showcasing a dual card, now today we get a report on a dual card that scaled 100% on a select title...coincidence?
Little Vega goes up against the 1080 mark my words.

So it only scales up. Not the greatest news in an increasingly more mobile world. But hey, one step at a time.

Disappointing event...I think they push the VR thing too much. The spicy detail...not so spicy more of a lame detail if you ask me. AMD need some marketing specialists and they need to be able to get this events right as they are really important to the end user.

I agree and understand where you're coming from, but i think nvidia hosting an event after them, they didn't want to reveal too much. Think about it, it can go either way for AMD, but judging by Ryzens pre release success i won't debunk the idea that Vega is already ready and that AMD is going to be tweaking some more(maybe all the way til launch). If it's as scalable as they said then i highly believe we are/have not seen big Vega at all.

Benchmark Scores 3050 scores good 15-20% lower than average, despite ASUS's claims that it has uber cooling.
All we know so far is that it can beat a 1080 in Vulkan Doom. That's not enough.
If all 500mm^2 chip can do is beat 314mm^2 chip, they need to do something with their team.

If I had a card releasing in 2-3 months time and I knew it could beat the 1080ti
Most likely scenario is that AMD is finishing chip that is about Titan/1080Ti level.
And if so, what would you say, "oh, wait for me for the same performance, maybe I'll drop price by 50$ or so"? :)

Counter question: having in mind that consumer Volta is unlikely in 2017, why would Huang drop price so drastically?

I understand but the way they treated the guests that were speaking at this event...they should've let them speak a bit more not interrupting them all the time

I can't speak on the event as i was too busy to watch it live, i will have to read up on it the
hit the tube to see it. I never really like press events unless I'm there as speakers are generally too boring and i lose interest real fast, so i rather watch someone else's summary. I do think AMD have the ball in their court now that the 1080ti is now officially spec'd. I look forward to more revealing info from now one. I love nvi/amd but i need competition at least like how ryzen is bringing it.

I honestly don't get why they are still harping on about VR. I mean where is it? Where's the killer app for VR? All we've got is nice HMDs and crappy content or glorified tech demos, the gear itself is clunky as fuck, expensive as fuck, and the overall sense of immersion is fighting an uphill battle against long play sessions and fatigue - if you don't have to puke in the first place. Is this AMD dreaming about a future that will never exist once again? They gotta learn someday...

It got pushed hard by HTC, Valve and others, and so far only the cheap-ass PSVR is doing 'relatively' well. But then again so did PS2's Eye Toy until it took a nosedive...

They should sell Vega as a 4K-120hz killer GPU, not this VR optimized junk. We know by now that good FPS in VR can be done with tricks, and aren't a result of massive amounts of GPU power per se.

They did the same with Polaris, it's a big deal because it increases the VR TAM!

Because, clearly the market was desperate for a $200 card to pair with a $800 headset.

Yet another one who never tried Vive/Rift and criticizing the technology.
