It's only slightly faster in synthetics, but in games you wouldn't be able to notice at all. Plus you'd have to buy a new board.

a 955 will only work with an AM3 board. The performance of both CPU's at 3.2ghz are the same. The 940 has a DDR2 controller built in and the 955 has a DDR3 controller built in.

the Phenom II 955 has a dual DDR2/3 Memory Controller so it dosnt mater what AM2, AM2+ or AM3 board you put it, only requirement is bios support for 955
and the right memory type for the boards

i see you got a AM2+ board subhendu, so yes just get a 955

940 = 3.0ghz, 2ghz HT, DDR2 only, socket AM2 or AM2+
955 = 3.2ghz, 2ghz HT, DDR2 and DDR3, socket AM2, AM2+ or AM3


940 and 955 has around Q9550 performace so why change to intel? LGA755 socket i outdated anyway

if you save money by going with am2+ you will still end up spending it when you upgrade later

thats it since he has a 955 already

If he buys 940 and wants to upgrade to AM3
1. Cpu
2. Mobo
3. Ram

might as well buy it now since he needs a cpu

My 955 was able to hit 3.8 stable with stock volts i have a 3dmark06 to prove it
My 955 performs better with less volts then my 940 did

Why not buy it in the future? for now, a AM2+ vs AM3 with both PII 955 is very little performance increase... and it will always be, 200$+ is not worth it to just get ddr3

that would just add more to the cost
save 50 now but your going to still spend it in the future

I don't get it... hes not going to spend it later at all! If he buys the PII 940, he'll keep it until, say, another AM3 CPU is much better etc, and then he'll completely upgrade to AM3

not if you have more volts going through it
