AMD RX 7000 series GPU Owners' Club

Anyone who uses a high resolution / high refresh rate / multi-display setup - what is the idle power consumption on your card?

I've just upgraded from 1080p 60 Hz to 3440x1440 144 Hz, and the idle board power on my 7800 XT jumped from 18 W to 33-38 W on the desktop, and over 45-48 W while browsing.

Is there anything I could do to sort of normalise it a bit?

Fluid motion preview driver is here btw
Despite claims of it only working in DX11 and DX12 games if managed to make it work in Vulkan and even DX9 games, if not tried using it in Opengl games yet.
You do need quite a decent minimum framerate or it will start ghosting

If seen lower but compared to me that looks normal

Then it's the same as DLSS 3 - at low minimum frame rate, there are ghosting and latency issues, but at high minimum frame rate, it's pointless. Gimmick, nothing more.

That's a shame. :( At least it gets back to around 10 W when the monitor is off.

You can also enable AFMF + FSR3 so from 60 to 120 then double it again to 240 fps

But if the native (minimum) frame rate is low to begin with, it's still useless.

Its perfect for when you got oke enough framerate but just want even more tho, but if its the same as dlss3 then how the hell people even playing with path tracing that can't be playable lol.

Iirc had the same issue on my other 144hz display (ViewSonic) and noticed a difference with idle power consumption @ 144hz.

What I did was change the Hz from 144 to 100Hz and that fixed the problem. I was still running my games @ 144Hz just desktop and browsing was lower for the idle power consumption to stay lower.

Try playing around with your Hz in desktop and see what that does.

23.9.3 silently added 120 fps recording support as well on fluid motion preview driver, but yet lacks HDR recording support, i dunno why AMD is rejecting HDR so much even for AFMF its not supported which sucks.

SDR means 8bits per pixel, probably the instructions they use are faster than on 32bit integers which you'd have to use on an HDR source.

For all i care they tonemap down to SDR if thats all they can do having washed out recording is so pointless, heck for HDR they only need to record the meta data should not be hard to support.

It doesn't seem to be doing much on my end. :(

The only thing that helps is dropping the desktop resolution to 2560x1080, which isn't ideal for obvious reasons.

You got one of those monitors probably with bad blanking range that does not allow vram to go idle.

Blanking range?

My VRAM seems to be sitting around the 900 MHz territory for some reason. I'll just compensate by setting a shorter monitor switchoff time in Windows power management until there's a solution.

Its setup in cru vertical blanking to small or something like that it wont let the memory downclock AMD probably wont be able to ever fix it maybe next gen they do, all they can do is throw bandaids or use a better fix.

Shame. :( I guess I'll just make do with a shorter display switch-off time, then.

Weird behaviour for me with wallpaper engine HDR off its usually idling at 45w tbp 30-45w without wallpaper engine without doing anything.
but as soon as i go play YouTube video fullscreen and pause it wait a couple of seconds it drops to 10w tbp, so the idle is due whats on screen which is quite odd instead of whats happening currently on screen, so even if nothing happens on screen it does not drop down to 10w tbp but it does when at fullscreen YouTube video that is paused, i suspect they will eventually fix it for real.

edit: just pausing wallpaper engine alone wont bring it down but minimizing everything on my screen does, but firefox eats the most idle consumption while active on screen even tho nothing happens which is odd.

As well as disabling hardware acceleration, i guess high idle is result of bad utilization lack of optimization while browsing and doing daily stuff rather in my case.

I am pretty sure AMD knows as well, if you have high idle i would test by playing a YouTube video then pausing it while wallpaper engine is paused, you should see it bottom out if not you have high idle issue due to monitor, otherwise due lack of optimization, the more windows active the higher the idle it seems.

That's interesting! I'll have a look when I'm back home (I'm at work right now).

Appearntly you can make AFMF work on MPC-HC but requires default renderer and dx9.dll and dxgi.dll file from the dxvk x64 folder into the mpc-hc folder download right here https://github.com/doitsujin/dxvk

Pretty funny AFMF just works on everything, no idea why they are trying to lock it down to only dx11 and dx12 it works on the 2e vision of the technical preview driver, not sure if it still works with the new rx6000 series tech preview driver saw it was being locked down to only dx11 and dx12 in that driver, so went back to older tech preview driver.

There was a feature some years ago AMD called "fluid motion video" or something like, it was frame interpolation for videos, probably AFMF is based a lot on that so no surprises there.

And users getting banned for anti-lag+ now in CS2 and Apex legends not sure about COD heard its also banning anti-lag+ users

Welp joined the club coming from a Red Devil 6950XT I grabbed this on a deal. Just don’t like you just have 2 colour choices so I’ll go with none.

Yeah i got banned on Apex legends. I submitted an appeal and got unbanned.

I ordered this Limited Edition on launch day just before it went out of stock. Love it. Runs very cool! Just need some custom cabling and another fan! I also need to remember to turn off “Live” photos. So grainy!

Wish I had space for something like the Red Devil. Only real downside of ITX.
