Some are looking as if AMD are already on the slippery slop to nowhere, but will their latest rendition of the (dying) Athlon64 help to slow them down?

AMD's last hurrah for it's 90nm X2 Processor...

Would anyone with an AM2 bored be inclined to upgrade to a Black Edition X2 or is just a waste of money?

Opinions please...

waste of money...

Personally, I think it was just be a waste of money.

I do however like the name... Black Edition. I wonder if they'll make it a limited edition with a black PCB. That'd be cool!

I doubt it as Black retains heat so... that puts the fire out on my... fire. :/

would be cool, but u see it only a couple of times when u have it(hmmm black chip and black cooler:rockout::rockout::rockout:)

It's great! Death of a processor, why in the hell not?!:nutkick:

AMD are losing it....I'm sorry but they really are. EOL it already...

True, but it's the fact you do have it!

Hmmm.... I'd like to make a totally Black rig.

  • Black chassis.
  • Black motherboard PCB
  • GFX PCB
  • Soundcard.
  • CPU*
  • PSU
  • Cables
  • Optical & HDDs
  • Fans and whatever else.

The black PCBs would be hard to find I guess - excluding the soundcard. Manufacturers should give you a choice of what colour PCB you want. Stupid manufacturers.

I really don't think this is something to take all that seriously. This is more of a collectors item rather than AMD's latest and fastest or anything. I like AMD's attitude with this because it may mean one of two things: This is the death of AMD as we know it and here is some artistic proof, or the Phenom brand is going to bury the old Athlons and whatever else thier is out there. We will see.

Me? Naw, not even if I still had my AM2 system.

But I do have a not-so-technically-inclined friend who will probably buy a couple of these for his AM2 systems. It's a drop-in upgrade for him.

reminds me of the demise of the p4 (right about the time it came out i think damn netburst architecture :shadedshu) releasing a 3.7ee, amd is looking silly imo releasing a 3.2 X2, how can they expect this to sell or why bother when they cant compete at the moment, seems to me its just another marketing ploy to try and hold onto some kind of market share while they scramble to get there next gen chips ready

One last push from K8.....just give us K10 already.

Probably wanted to get rid of all the left over waffers they had.

Damn right! I want to see how the energy efficient, 2GHz Barcelona will stock up to the current Core 2 line. I'm hoping, really hoping that they'll be able to compete with them.
If they don't hurry up and get the proper Phenom X4s out soon after that, then the 45nm Penyrn will steal up the market, and that's before Intel start using an an on-die memory controller and CSI. If so, AMD will end up like Texas Instruments.

:(

TI isn't dead, they're just in a different field. Like DLP, except companies are straying away from that as well. I don't think they have to necessarily beat Core 2 in everything, just have to come close and offer a better price to performance ratio. Well we're only like a month a way right? We'll see very soon.

I never said they were dead. In fact they're doing really well now they've stopped fabricating chips.

They'd stop fabricating CPUs and sell the their DFM (design for manufacturing) talents .
They are the 2nd best x86 chip markers after all, and they're methodologies are one of the most sophisticated.

ohh ok cool. Well that wouldn't be too bad for amd, but they'd take ati with them, which means a complete monopoly in the computer industry by nvidia and intel :(

Exactly... which is crap. I was hoping, as IBM are partners with AMD would step in and help funds. I guess they can only do so much. It was also rumoured that Samsung were looking into purchasing AMD ~ if only that rumour was true. It'd be the end of Intel and nVIDIA.

mines all black (well heatsinks are silver and copper and cpu is green but not seen, but you know) bar my 76gt, but that is the next thing to be upgraded.

i will be getting a black one tho, evga 88gts? :rockout:

thats what i said lol

on die mem controller w00t amd has a lot of work to do me thinks, i love amd i have about 4-5 of there chips as opposed to 3x intels. but the core range is a damn good chip and is better with the addition of penryn. just hope amd can compete otherwise its not good for the end consumer pricewise

Yes its a waste of money, just buy the 6000+ and paint it black :p

Shush don't say people are going down. Anyone going down is horrible for us. IMO it'd be best if they were on even footing (as far as money wise).....maybe one day.
