Another GTX 460 Question.

Ok so I'm not going to ask you green or red, or 768 or 1gb

However I'm stuck between these two cards...

The MSI GTX 460

or the Gigabyte GTX 460?

Is there any reason to why I should pick one over the other?

I'd personally go for the Gigabyte, the cooling solution looks to be more complete.

I went for the Gigabyte, just thought it cools the ram better with more air flowing over them.

Yeah that's the way I was looking at it... I was just hoping someone would come along and say that the MSI version is designed for minimal or lesser use of material but with a design that create's an airflow exactly where needed! or something a long those lines... whilst telling the truth too

But I don't think I'm going to get to see that am I The MSI would go with my setup so much more than the Gigabyte, but then again so would the Gigabyte compared to most other versions, either being a red colour or something that just doesn't fit with my setup

I'd usually say gigabyte because I'm a massive fan, however, the cooling solution on th MSI cyclone model is more than sufficient for the GTX460 and I believe it supports voltage controll in MSI afterburner where the gigabyte model doesnt, but I might be wrong.

yea but the msi 460 seems to have shittier ram cooling and usually when a gpu does die its the ram that goes first from my experience also the msi cooler on other cards has blocked sli / crossfire cables so it makes it a giant bitch to run 2 cards not sure if thats the case with the 460 tho

I doubt I will ever be using SLI/Xfire, it's just not my cup of tea

But as you mentioned the cooling on the RAM is what worries me about this card

but really how hot does GDDR5 get? I'm not convinced some ramsinks or a full cover cooler will make all the difference. if you hit 1000mhz memory (4ghz effective) thats perfect anyway and the card should still last 5+ years, by which time it will be ancient.

Im with you, I don't think that the RAM is going to get all that hot at all.

On a side note, the Cyclone cooler looks like the stock 460 cooler, minus the shroud, increased in size by about 15%.

well i know the 4870 used ggdr5 and most fail issues ive seen was from ram overheating and dying and i know the 5k cards have error correction if the ram is overclocked to far as a fail safe of sorts but im not sure nvidia does the same thing but in all honesty id rather be safe then sorry and have cooling on my ram especially when overclocking is concerned

The Gigabyte has a sink for the vregs. The MSI doesnt. Dont know if that matters much with these cards.

might be worth asking the question in the GTX460 owners club, but I doubt heat from the memory chips will be an issue whatsoever, and if it is, it should happen within the year which would put you well within warranty.

keep in mind GDDR5 has been around for around two years now, problems that may have happened with 4870's should be long buried by now.

I really want a 1gb MSI GTX460, but I can't really put it in my laptop.....

I think I'm leaning towards the MSI version, the colour will match better and it is certainly the better looking cooler of the two, and I suppose if it does ever concern me about the temps then I'll buy some extra heatsinks.

Really need the guy who is having most of my old rig to up and soon!!!

I have the 1Gb MSI 460 with water cooling (see my post: http://forums.techpowerup.com/showthread.php?p=1975009&posted=1#post1975009) with only ram sinks with no fans blowing direct on them. I am running the ram at 4680 MHz and to the touch after bench testing they were not very hot at all.

One additional note...I would be more concerned about cooling the voltage regulators than the ram, especially if you plan to overvolt...

prob never going to overvolt unless for benchmarks, so shouldn't be a problem

Gigabyte has a great cooling solution and it's almost impossible to hear the noise.

1x CoolerMaster GX 650w (80plus)

Good choice, although i have a pair of Palit GTX460 sonics - wouldnt swap them for anything else (well except two 480s )

Yeah I must admit they seem to be the favourite in the general scene. The red really wouldn't look right in my rig though, I very almost went with an ASUS GTX 460 just for the sake of the colour of the PCB, but This MSI will be close enough and is still among the top performers in the GTX460 range.

Yup, cracking cards, I work at a PC system builder and couldnt believe how much I got my 460s, especially for the performance, even my Palits go up to 880 core stable, more than enough for me
