It makes sense to take all precautions, within reason, considering the potential consequences and cost if you don't—but "within reason" is different for different people. I move around a lot, have become adept at handling components safely, and there is no carpeting in sight, so for me the wrist strap is of negligible use. Not so for everyone, in every environment.

If i use an anti static wrist strap and connect the clip to a metal part on the inside of a PC that is turned on and im holding some RAM, will it kill the RAM?

So do ya guys think my RAM is ok?

If something is wrong with it, it was probably bad at purchase. It should be fine.

that's actually my impression too .. most educated people are paranoid about esd [for no reason imo]

I actually have seen esd damaged components, but I was working in an electronics test lab.... and these components came from test equipment hooked to high voltage machines and getting heavy use, vs. home pc's. I'm not arguing with you by any means, but it can happen....

Agreeing with Tigr there... no carpet/socks sure is a good idea. A fluffy sweater and sitting on carpet is probably about the worse it could be.
