Any other program other than CPU-Z to see if my ram is running single or dual channel mode?

CPU-Z is showing me single channel mode, but I am confused because I am pretty sure the person I bought this school laptop from said it was 2x 4gb for a total of 8gb, not a single 8gb stick. It is an HP laptop though, hard as crap to get to the ram, have to remove the keyboard, etc... trying to avoid all that work...

Maybe You do have two sticks but they are different and thus dont work in dual channel?

Some CPUs/motherboards don't support any more than single channel even with all DIMMs populated. Especially the case of budget systems. If CPU-Z says both SO-DIMMs are populated and they aren't dual-channel, then that's likely the case.

it is confirmed, its a single 8gb stick at 2400 speed cas 17. ADATA brand. now i need to buy me a second stick 8gb 2400 cas 17 and figure out how to install it lol

Well I wouldn't go on trying to open it without a service manual. HP has that for most, if not all, newer models, and there's a chance you break something if you don't know how to open it (partly depending on model).

I'll find the manual for you. If you're running Windows, go to:
Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Devices and Printers (just paste it into Explorer and you'll get there),
select the laptop and you'll see the model in the status bar in the lower end.

I upgraded my brothers new HP 14 (i3-7100U), which is a smaller variant without a DVD. It took me maybe 3 minutes to open with the manual. Without it I would most likely break off some plastic tabs and it would probably not close properly after that. The construction felt more like a phone than a laptop, very thin plastic. A plastic tool is recommended.

I thought the model only had one slot so I got a 16 GB module for him, but when I opened it I saw two slots. He wanted 16 + 4 GB, which is out of spec according to the manual (2 x 8 max), but it worked perfectly of course.

thank you for your help. i am just going to have to ask for a professional local repair place to upgrade the ram for me. i am not risking removing the display, etc on my own. i know i will screw something up. i really hate that HP makes it so hard to upgrade ram on almost every model they make, insane.

aida64 shows single ram so yeah... got screwed on the sale. oh well. i imagine single channel is slowing down this 8th gen cpu quite a bit though.

You're right, I didn't see the part about having to remove the display. That's insane! Totally different and much more complicated than the 14" model.

Oh I thought you needed 16 GB. I'd say single channel is alright for regular use like Office/media/internet. I suggest you leave it as it is for a few weeks/months or so, maybe you're all set with what you've got. You can't go wrong with that.
When I got my new laptop it had 1 x 8 GB, and I added another 8 GB much later. It wasn't like the laptop got much faster because of that. In fact, I didn't notice any difference in terms of performance or snappiness based on my use.
