I just looked up this 4 GB ram kit that was $40 6 months ago. And it was at that price point for a year before then, going back before the recession. It's $73 now, so that's a 82% increase. Almost as expensive as ddr3! Actually, I've heard the chips are 50 cents more expensive than ddr3 now, so once that filters down to retailers it'll be even worse. Really take's the wind out of my sub $350 gaming builds...

They used to have an overstock of DDR2 since nobody was buying it. They lowered prices and people bought it. Now it's currently standing at where it "should" be.

All RAM and DVD burners have gone up in price. DVD burners were ~$20 for like 3 years. Now I can't find one below $28. While not much, but that is still about 45% increase in price.

Yeah I've noticed the burners too, not sure why that is unless there's a shortage of them. A little while ago newegg and zipzoom were completely sold out of them.

1) The dollar is getting weaker and most RAM is imported.
2) Production is shifting to DDR3 so the price of DDR2 climbs.
3) As already mentioned, there was an over-supply, reduced demand, and de-valuing of DDR2.
4) One memory manufacturer (Qimonda) went out of business. Less competition leads to higher prices.

Almost all burners are also manufacturered outside of the USA so again, the dollar is weakening because of that fabricated $2.2 trillion. When trading with other countries is when that exchange weakness shows through.

Not over here, its still super cheap, the more your $ goes down the cheaper it gets here :D

BUT the prices of DVD/CD Burner drives have gone up from $32 to around $59 :shadedshu

The dollar has been weakening for ages, but things have still been getting cheaper and cheaper for us in the USA. Never made a lot of sense to me. With stuff like Intel's E5200 and AMD's X4 620 processors and motherboards are so cheap now it helps to counter balance the ram and dvd drives. Would have been nice to have all the deals happen at once though...

RAM has gone up a bit (2GB is like $55, used to be about $40) but the burners are the same ($35).

Blimey, hadn't noticed the RAM increase. I bought a 4GB kit a few months ago for £43, just checked the same etailer and its gone up to £63!

I didn't really notice the DDR2 prices going up, as I haven't had to buy any in quite some time, but I did notice the DVD burner prices got higher. I just bought one recently, and it cost me $35 shipped. The last 3 I bought over the course of the past few years were $25 or less.

While all very true, I just checked and DDR3 RAM has gone up in prices as well. I had forgotten about Qimonda, which I now think is the primary reason. The RAM I have was $65 when I bought it on sale for $5 off, bring retail at that time to $70. That was about 3 months ago. The exact same kit is now $85. So what happened seems to have effected all RAM in general.

i grabbed my 4 gigs ballistix @33 euros
and now they are like 60 or more
looooooooool

PLUS almost all ddr2 now is low voltage chips and higher binned I'C's so its worth the $ you pay whereas before you could not overclock some ddr2 at all

Same thing that happened with DDR. The stuff is the same price if not more than ddr2.

here ddr2 is still cheap as most people still have to shift from dimm or ddr to ddr2

And how many times have memory manufacturers been in trouble for collusion/price fixing and other unfair business practices? It has been going on for years.

hrm, well it makes sense when you think about it. demand was high a year back and supply was also high. once the supply dropped and the demand stayed the same prices increased. now that ddr3 is becoming commonplace its prices are lowering. this is fairly common in the tech industry.

Your exactly right Rhino! Blu Ray Drives for pcs have decreased in price and dvd burners have went up a little.

Compare the prices of DDR to DDR2 and then DDR3.

DDR3 is dropping in price and DDR2 is going back to a steady level.
A year ago a 4gb kit of GOOD DDR2 was about £40 now the same kits are up by as much as £10.

At least it makes people more inclined to try the new tech.

yeah for those who just need a quick stick of ram its not ideal its good for those who want to try a new system or that because the price of cheap DDR3 isnt much more than decent DDR2

its just a trick to get us to buy more DDR3

the prices of DDR2 will stay the same because when sales increase for DDR3, the volume of DDR2 manufactured will decrease and to cover costs of less demand it will level out in price

im sure second hand DDR2 is still okay in price tho

Ahhh, Supply and Demand. The Seesaw of price changes that controls when we all buy certain upgrades, "Cause it was on sale and I was getting anyway...".

I do it, I am sure everyone here does it. How many people here are waiting til the Weekend after Black Friday (when all electronics drop in price) to get a certain upgrade for their rig?

Kinda makes me feel like an idiot not waiting a month to get my i7 crap. :ohwell:

Yep - DDR2 prices locally went up like crazy. I could get a pair of G.Skill 1000Mhz CL5-5-5-15 DDR2 for around 80$ locally, now the price is over 100$ for the same set.

DDR3 prices did go up, as well. When I built my i7 rig I bought a 12Gb (6x2Gb) set of DDR3 for 199$ (Off the egg, not locally), but when I tried to repeat the exercise a month ago there was no 12Gb DDR3 set for under 240$ or so.
