"could it possibly be a an overheating problem?"

maybe your just pushing it too far and too fast... did you try to gradually increase the clocks?

please refer to http://www.techpowerup.com/atitool/doc/ for proper and safe method of overclocking. There no good oc setting for any card because every card OCs differently. You'll just need to use AtiTool's find max features to safely find your ceiling and NOT push that slider all the way up just because you think you can...

well, now i seem to have found a good setting on the ati tool, but every time i go to 3dmark05 and benchmark it, the settings get put back to default, what am i doing rong? oh and bye the way,
i had the settings oc'd to core at 426mhz and my mem@ 367.50 and it was going very good, and the temp was at 70c to 73c under load.

Is atiltool running when you run 3dmark? after you've set your clocks leave it running. Alternatively, you can also make 2d and 3d profiles. Set your 2d profile at stock speeds and 3d profile and OCed speeds.

Stock 9800XT clocks are 365 core and 412 memory. Looks like you've underclocked your memory...

edit: reversed core and memory speeds :o
