What's the best way to apply paste on a AM2 CPU?

What's the best way to apply paste on a AM2 CPU?

Contrary to others I believe about the size of two rice grains (because they're considerably larger than LGA775 cpu's) should do it. The I put the Heatsink on it and let that spread it out. I'm at 46 celcius during a 3hour 17 minute run of orthos. My voltage is at 1.475 so I think thats pretty good.

It varies. Artic Silver has its own explanation of how to put its pastes on. Usually a small drop and spread it out with a business card or something. But most say a small drop (grain or rice) and let the heatsink spread it out.

I still reckon 2 grains on AM2 because they're cpu's/heatspreaders are so much bigger. Thus I don't think you can use the instructions for LGA775 and AM2 universally. They're very different.

So just a small drop on the CPU and then put the heatsink firmly in place and tighten it in?

What's the best method to remove the current thermal paste to clean the heatsink and CPU?

Get some tissue paper and scrub it off (gently but not so it won't come off) When it starts to rub off it really will start. Make sure you get it all off and none of it gets onto the motherboard's PCB (the board bit). If it does thats fine just get it off.

You'll never get it all off by rubbing. Get hold of some Isopropyl Alcohol from a pharmacy and use a rolled up piece of tissue or a cotton bud. Acetone also works, but can leave a film behind, alcohol is the best IMO.

Good point. Sorry I left that out.

I'll purchase a bottle :). Thanks.

isopropylic alcohol to wipe the gunk off and degrease............

Best is to apply a rice grain or two-too much and you have a nice heat dam!!!whatever the stuff- and then spread it out with a card or piece of plastic (i use a cut out medicine tablet's container:laugh: )nice and thin (see through kinda) Remember the thermal paste/grease is to help transfer heat to the heat sink where the contact is non existant (normally on a molecular level) and air is present. (in an ideal world there would be no air in between the cpu and heatsink and heat transfer would be perfect!!!)

if you only let pressure do the work chances are it won't spread out evenly..........IMHO!!!

IMHO if you start trying to spread it with a card you are more likely to get an air bubble. Putting a one and a third rice grain size blob in the centre and allowing the pressure of the heatsink to spread it ensures that no air is trapped, and as pressure is applied by the clamps evenly the spread is perfect.

one rice grain for single cores
2 for dual cores

on the contrary, you want to use lint free cloth to clean off the grease such as a coffee filter or other various cloths, when you use anything else tiny particles of the tissue or cotton are filling the microscopic valleys of the heatsink(exactly the same places you want the new grease to be filling) and yes use the highest % isopropyl
as a note, the lint free cloths take a bit of work to get off all the grease, especially when it's an OEM application (they tend to use thermal grease like is dry-wall haha) but just be patient and keep cleaning

They look the same with the IHS off....I don't think you need two for dual cores.

it's what i read in other forums :/

Hello. I wanted to bump this thread. I have had socket 775 now for a few months with the rest of my upgrade etc and wanted to ask do I put thermal paste/compound in the centre on the CPU (when CPU is already in it's socket) and just put a size of a rice grain in the centre then place my Tuniq Tower cooler which I will get soon?

Thanks.
