I have a Acer 23.6" 2ms 120Hz monitor currently and I was wondering if it's worth getting a 4k monitor or wait for a short while? I've always asked myself if it's worth it now or not but I'd like peoples opinions. :)

What games do you play? If your into competitive...CS - GO, Dota, LoL...etc...or high action games. My best bet would be the ROG Swift or it's Acer--Fresync counter part. If your into MMO's, RPG's., Witcher 3. 4k Is definitly a better option I think. I bought a Titan X when it launched, and paired it with a an Acer XB280HK 4k TN panel 60fps with Gsync. And I am very..very happy. Now..if I could do it all over again...I'd want to see what the ROG Swift looks like...Definitly waiting on the price on that to come down a bit..then I might have to upgrade/side grade.

My next monitor upgrade next month will probably be for a 27" 2560x1440 IPS. 4K monitors are still a little too expensive for my tastes IMHO

If I was about to buy a monitor right now, I would pick an Asus PB287Q, but I'm not playing (almost) any games.

Not in my opinion. 1080p monitors are >$100 and big enough to be almost too big for me to use. I'm happy with my 1680x1050 screen. As a gamer I think 120hz will be better anyway. I don't think 4k really belongs on a a PC monitor anyway (barring some serious productivity uses)... Just too big to be used normally.

only You can justify a purchase as "worth it" or not, but frankly @ $350USD, 4K isn't very expensive...My monitor was more than twice that when it was new years ago....I feel like 250-350 is a reasonable amount to expect to pay for a monitor of decent quality or options.

I persoanlly dont feel the whole 4k craze myself, nor do i see a point, but Im only one person. theres always someone who want s the best....weather they need it, or More likely Just because it IS the newest and best
like someone who owns a titan, or a 980, and only plays @ 1080p.

Benchmark Scores Faster than yours... I'd bet on it. :)
Does $350 get you at least a 60Hz 4K panel though?

Also, when stepping up to 4K, you need the hardware to support it... typically dual cards...

well theres 60-75hz....so...if the 15hertz REALLY matters your gonna have to pay for it.

but as was mentioned above....Your gonna need some serious HP in a GPU to power that 4k @ 60 hz...75hz a bit more.....the GPU or GPU's will cost more than the monitor.

and that 350$ WAS a 60Hz monitor HERE the reviews are okay, but the 3 year warranty is comforting...im sure there is better, i just feel the least cost on the monitor the better since the GPu is gonna REALLY hit the Wallet.

Even if I have money to afford 4K monitors, I'd rather not to. Why? Because it will make a domino effect. Larger res monitors requires lots of processing power for gaming, and if you don't do gaming, no activities on PC requires such high res monitors except for production. Also, to me, two (pr three) 1080p monitors feels sexier than one 4K monitors. I don't do games but I do chatting while watching something very often so you can see that two or three monitors fits me better than one large monitor. But then again, it's just me :)

Ain't worth the premium price.

Don't light the back light, it flickers a bit and... the black levels are very very bad... maybe a bad sample that I saw, but during Witcher 3 the bottom right corner was milky white...

Naah. Not unless you have endless money. In my view there are six tiers of monitors for mortals(excluding professional use, like graphic designers etc):

  • Cheap 1080p
  • 1080p IPS
  • 144Hz 1080p
  • 1440p IPS
  • 1440p 144Hz

To me no, not just about cost but it's way to early even more so if your a gamer. Even if i had the money to burn on one a long with a video card due to my requirements i would not see it as worth it.

Wait until they mature and options will flourish and prices will drop and hopefully power requirements of video cards will drop which is another reason i think it's too early..

Well being someone with one (Acer 4k 28inch monitor) and recently getting to play with both an Acer 144hz 1440p monitor (Freesync) and a 1080p 60hz monitor here is my take.

Its worth it in terms of the picture quality (Plus I do not have to use MSAA at all) especially if you play a lot of games with great amounts of detail. I play BF4/Hardline(Just a bit of Hardline) and it looks fantastic to have that game in such high detail. Comparing it to 1080p its night and day, however with the 1440p the differences are not extreme except when we factor in the 144hz refresh (But that's a different argument). I also play games like Batman, League of Legends, Dayz, and many more which I will say look amazing at 4k and give great detail which to me is important when playing games especially when you just from a 27inch 1080p monitor at 60hz for a 2160p 28inch monitor at 60hz the difference is night day in each game.

If your interested in a 4k monitor, its a great upgrade especially for the future but only if your willing to invest in some serious hardware now otherwise you will have to drop the setting far to keep things smooth. A great midway option especially if you already like 120hz is a 1440p monitor with 144hz refresh rate and either Gsync or Freesync.

I absolutely love my 4k, but you need the hardware to be able to push it, as it will crush your soul.

I have a Acer 23.6" 2ms 120Hz monitor currently and I was wondering if it's worth getting a 4k monitor or wait for a short while? I've always asked myself if it's worth it now or not but I'd like peoples opinions. :)

Depends on an awful lot of things:
  • Existing hardware (which plays onto the next point)
  • Type of games you play - If you're like me, and you play an awful lot of everything, but not so many AAA games, 4K is dead easy to run on a GTX 970 and everything above. If however you spend your days playing every AAA release when it launches, your performance is going to require that you have a GTX 980ti minimum.
  • Panel type - Do you prefer cheap 60Hz TN panels? Do you prefer the pure colour quality of 60Hz IPS panels? Do you prefer decent quality 144Hz TN panels for competitive gaming?
  • Panel size - Depending on how far you sit from your desk, dictates what sort of panel size you need. You don't want to be constantly looking upwards. You'll need to decide whether you want 24", 28" or 32", ranging from very close positioning to quite far positioning.
Each of these points dictates how much this monitor (and hardware) is going to up by.

Me, I wanted quality colours, I sit extremely close to my desk, and I wanted something from a manufacturer well known for professional displays and factory colour calibration. So I got a Dell 24" IPS 4K monitor.

You'll need a new GPU(s) if you want to play games in 4k

In my opinion: No.

But if you have the money to invest or can afford a deception: Why not!?

Just my opinion.

My next monitor upgrade next month will probably be for a 27" 2560x1440 IPS. 4K monitors are still a little too expensive for my tastes IMHO
This is the way to go IMO. The switch from something like a 1080p TN panel monitor to a 1440p IPS/PLS monitor is a very noticeable upgrade and it doesn't require the GPU grunt that 4K needs.
