Are these ok temps for HD 7970 VRM

I have had my HD 7970 overclocked for long time at 1125MHz with 1.25v trough MSI AB. My GPU core temps are fine max 74C, but mostly below that. I recently was curious about VRM temps and after game session they seem to be at max VRM1 86C and VRM2 77C according to GPUZ. Are these temps for VRM still safe? Thanks!

Yeah those temps are fine for vrms, they're the hottest thing on the card, able to operate fine upto 105 with a throttle response at 115° , they're going to throttle if too hot and you would notice ,so no problems.

VRM's do run hot most time, but cleaner cooler, and less dust could help to reduce temps, everytime i take mu GPU apart and do a deep clean i do see a temp drop, minimal change.

your VRM's temps are decent enough

Good, some cards have a hsf that have a bigger gap so sometimes pads are needed. Typically I would use Akasa Shinetsu on them, yes if you take the hsf off at that point you need a new pad lol.

One last thing Ambient temperatures of your room determine how warm or cool your pc runs, so the cooler the room the better

glad you cut down some temps, how were the thermalpads? do they were looking damaged?

I wouldn't worry too much about those temps on VRM, as others said they are built to withstand way higher temperatures.

I remember I had an HD 6990 that used to run 94c on both cores for long gaming sessions and it ran like a champ years later.

Yeah thats a dual gpu part at that, never thought to eve look at vrms on my gpu considering its the size of a brick

5 series, 6 series, 7 series GPUs from AMD were built with insanely good components. I've always praised the red team for the PCBs build quality.

I was actually talking about OPs GPU. I'm pretty sure tho that the 290 from Sapphire has outstanding PCB build quality, Sapphire is the way to go on Radeon graphics IMO.

glad you cut down some temps, how were the thermalpads? do they were looking damaged?

The card has separet big black heatsink from big core heatsink for VRM and VRAM which i cleaned from dust and therefore didnt take it off since i dont have replacement thermalpads.

maybe if you replace thermal pads will notice 1-5 c max temp drop. still your temps on those chips is decent,

No need they take an awfully long time to dry out , about 5-7 year's or more I've used the same ones despite re timming , that does depend on heat, if the cards allowed to fur up to fail point the few months leading up to that would not be good for it.

Yes, look at the nitro+ Vega/580 and look at the VaporX290/390, pretty stout cards
