I tried AiMesh (with just one node) with two ASUS WiFi routers, but the performance was terrible; so for the moment I have just setup a repeater and things run much better.

Me, or typical of AiMesh?

But any mesh can still only be as good as the hardware you choose. If the Asus routers you used were cheap budget garbage to begin with......as well as the wifi performance of your phone/desktop/laptop in the first place. Also you need to be keeping your Asus/Merlin firmware up to date for AiMesh improvements.

Asus also has a dedicated mesh lineup now (Zenwifi I think?).

Using a pair of old AC68Us that predate AiMesh itself and only received it in a later firmware update probably doesn't speak volumes about AiMesh's potential............AC68U was never impressive for range or performance to begin with. What firmware?

Get a router with actual decent range and you might even get away with just one unit. AC86U and AX86U come to mind

not Merlin

One unit works OK alone, I was just trying things out.

My two Netgear RAX10 units allow me to play with the ASUS AC68U/R units.
