hi, im really confused about my laptops motherboard. CPUZ told me my mainboard is a socket r989 with a core i7 720qm, but wikipedia list the compatabile motherboard i should have is the m989. I currently have an asus g73jh-A3 with a core i7 720qm. i want to update it to a core i7 940xm or i7 920xm to get a better performance boost, and do as much as i can to make it not outdated in the future. according to wikipedia my asus laptop motherboard is compatabile with the core i7 920xm, as you can see here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nehalem_(microarchitecture). check the clarksfield, for mobile processors. i went to intels website, and according to their specs the current cpu i have only fits in 988 motherboards which i do not have. I want to make sure i don't waste $1000 plus dollars on upgrading the cpu. i go to intels website to check their specs for that and it says it needs a 988 motherboard, im really confused and hope someone can help me out before i waste money on this.

protip, throw away the thought of upgrading the CPU in a laptop.

whats wrong with the i7 720qm anyway? sure its the lowest mobile i7, but think about that for a second, its a frikken mobile i7.

yeah i agree with you there its a mobile i7 is cool but i remember reading asus computers are upgradable too.

That's true... why not just put that money aside to buy another laptop in a years time or something... upgrading the processor in a laptop is not worth it IMO, but that's just me...

Sure it may possibly be the lowest mobile i7 on the market... but why not compare that with other's below it's own specs... rather than the one's above, I think you'll find you do have a pretty sweet laptop compared to a lot of people out there ;)

Unless you need a powerhouse of a lappy (desktop replacement), see what else you might want to upgrade (bigger/more HDD or switch to an SSD+HDD if the lappy can hold 2 drives) (more ram) and swapping the CPU might not be a good idea instead of getting a new lappy (If you really NEED more cpu power)

this laptops designed to have 2 harddrive installed, where do you think i could get a harddrive and ssd designed for laptops.

thanks guys for enlightening me, im gonna go with an sdd+hdd upgrade. love to see how fast this boots up with an ssd :)

put the OS and your most-used programs on the SSD, and the rest on your (suggested 500gb if you use lots of files/programs) HDD. Most SSD's go in the 2.5 size but I'd check their specs to make sure they're compatible with lappys.
