When I have bought my card ASUS DC2OC R9 290X it comes with many problems with freezes and stuttering inside my games. I had many BSODs and black screens problems. When I made update by this tool provided by ASUS, all my problems has gone away. I had no problems using ASUS .exe file. It really improved stability and gain of performance in my case because I came from EVGA GTX 670FTW for this R9 290X and asked myself... Am I doing something wrong or this card is crap? So I started to see all my system but everything was fine. So I decided to look for ASUS support and for my hapiness it has BIOS updates that have performance gain and system stability. It really helped me a lot! So I can only appreciate this ASUS service to put this Vbios updates for us.

Ps: I still think AMD has to work more in their drivers. When compared to NVIDIA is far away long!!

It would be good to see if this has worked for him. Maybe more users of this ASUS R9 290X have the same problem. Or maybe cards from other manufacturers. I was trying to send my .rom file to VGA bios collection of TECHPOWERUP. But it tells already exist in their databases. As I can see there are 3 bios updates from ASUS website that were not put inside Techpowerup VGA Database (is not updated). So cards from other manufacturers that we can´t download directly from their sites must have bios updates that maybe you can´t find it here!!

After about 40 seconds of nailchewing ... it happened.

I found on ROG site that instead of just simply running ASUS BIOS file, unarchive it with Winrar , put BIOS files in same folder and do atiwinflash.exe -f -p 0 biosfilename.rom

PROFIT !

But .....................

Remember I said something about PCIx_1 port gave me catalyst driver crash left and right and slow speeds as soon as I see any Video or some page that require rendering by GPU ? And in Games FPS goes up and down like a damn surfing wave ? Well .... same thign still happening. I wiped driver with DUU, re installed ...same thing .... I re installed Windows from format ...same thing still happening. Now I am concerned . For now card is in PCIx_3 port and everything works 100%. Any Idea on what can this be I mean driver crashing is not as bad as bricked card so I am happy but I still want to use it in PCIx_1 port. Also is there a real time logger that can simply log whatever is happening with Driver / card and I can pinpoint EXACT moment it happens for a first time after reboot so may be I can fix it ?

I made 2 things more to get an stable driver without any issues (14.9 and 14.9.1). I don´t know if this will work to you. In energy options on windows 7 I changed my configuration to HIGH PERFORMANCE MODE. If you go in options and after that change advanced energy options (I have my system in portuguese - BR so I don´t know if this will be the names) you will see PCI express energy options. I turned it OFF. Other thing I made was changing my desktop view disabling WINDOWS AERO. So now I just use windows basic options. I was having amdkmdap issue sometimes when playing!!

I don´t know if you disable ULPS will get any benefit if you use only 1 card, but you can try it!

Always best to flash rom prewindows, also always extract the old bios and back it up before you flash a new one. Did the bios flash both roms? If not you can select the 2nd bios, boot in, extract it, flip the switch to the first, then write the extracted back to the first rom.

If thats all sorted then I would guess you have something wrong in the mobo bios settings for PCI-E modes.

clear cmos

About that. You see with new Mobos UEFI Bios are advanced and I am sure there is something in it. Right now I have GPU in PCIx_3 slot but because I really want it in PCIx_1 I'll reset CMOS and will try to move card again. On X99 Deluxe there is RESET BIOS hard button (CLR_CMOS) I'll use it, totally remove Drivers with DUU utility and let's hope this will do something.

Also Any reason why PowerTechUp don't have latest BIOS online ? Or they have them but checking and looking if it's worth having it to begin with . ?

W1zzard hand checks every bios dump before it goes to that section. As you can imagine it does take a lot of time. However, if someone needs a specific version, he has been known to check it a bit faster to provide it to the users.
