Quick (noobie) question...
I'm upgrading my existing CPU to an E6700 on an Intel LGA775 mobo D946GZIS.
Will the bios auto-detect the new CPU?
Should I update the drivers before installing the new CPU?

Thanks!
V

Uh...

CPUs don't have drivers.

Thanks Dom!!!

np google is you friend ;)

Dom, actually I had already gone to Intel's website and downloaded the bios.exe update and the rather extensive bios / motherboard documentation for my board. Basically everything I could lay my hands on. My real concern is that, I've read that you should only update the bios if you're having problems. Not that I'm having problems, but I'm concerned that with my mobo being almost a year old and having NOT ever updated the bios, that it might not recognize the new CPU. Am I off track here?

Also, I don't have any special anti-static bands or gloves. Any recommendation on this when I go to replace the processor? I have everything plugged into a powerbar. So I was thinking that if I turn off the powerbar that should disconnect all power to the PSU but still keep it grounded....I think.... and as long as I keep an arm touching the bare metal of the case, that should discharge any static... ? Am I taking an unnecessary risk here? What would you do?

usually updated bios's add compatibility for newer cpu's thats why its recommended to update it

if your case is grounded touching the bare metal should ground you fine so there shouldn't be much of a problem there

as EviLZeD said thats why I told you update your bios to make sure the mobo supports it

and as for changing the cpu or anything I take the plug out of the psu and wait for the light on the mobo to go out, but if yours doesnt have one wait like 30sec.

and just thouch the bare metal of the case and do you got some paste for the new cpu ?

Dom / Evil, thanks again for your replies!

It's a boxed cpu with factory heatsink and the heatsink has the thermal paste on it already. Plus I watched a very pleasant if not mildly entertaining vid from Intel on how to physically change out the cpu. ie: opening the socket, etc :D okay, it wasn't very entertaining.....

Thanks to you guys, I'm sure I won't have any problems. (fingers-crossed) Cheers!!!

tis a bit daunting at first, but once your done its like, wtf! thats all?!

Yeah I know what you're saying Choppy, but ya know sometimes the seemingly simplest things.........:nutkick:

:)

did you do it then? oh yeah understand totally, i just built my first rig a couple months back, before that i was scared to open up my dell thinking id fry it or something stupid lol

Ummm, well.... that was easier than I expected !!! You were right Choppy! :)

Unfortunately the new heatsink and fan, although seemed like reasonable quality, had pretty flimsy mounting to the mobo. I ended up just using my old HS. But all is good, CPU was detected fine. Very noticable increase in speed. Best of all Supreme Commander is running WAY better!

Thanks all!!! :toast:

you need to update specs ;)

glad it worked :toast:
