Hello,

I have a system with an MSI B450 Gaming Pro Carbon AC motherboard, Ryzen 2700, and 64GB (4x16GB) of Corsair Vengeance LPX 3200 RAM. I bought the RAM in two 2x16GB kits at two different times. When I bought the first kit for originally building my PC, I was able to use XMP to run it at 3200 speeds. I got the second kit a year or two later and the system will only boot with 2133 speeds. Either kit runs XMP by themselves, but not together. I have already discussed this issue with some folks on PCPartPicker, so I am not really looking for a solution to it with my current system. If you have thoughts on it in addition to this discussion from PCPP, feel free to chime in.

I use my system for video editing, animation, and some gaming, and I have used well over 32GB of it several times in those workloads. So dropping down to one kit just to run it faster is not really worth it to me.

So, now I am a couple years down the road and am looking to upgrade. But I was curious if I upgraded to a Ryzen 5700X or 5800X if there would likely be better compatibility or if the motherboard would be an issue in play as well? I don't want to upgrade my CPU and still have a limited-use kit of RAM. I would rather wait until I can upgrade both my motherboard and my CPU if there were likely to be RAM speed issues with just a CPU upgrade.

Any thoughts are welcome! Thank you for your time.

The IMC on a ZEN 3 CPU should be much better than your current Ryzen 2700, so it may run all 4 sticks at XMP but there is no guarantee that it will.

The problem is that many motherboards have difficulty running 4X16GB Dimms,
because each 16GB dimm is dual rank and with 4 dimms you are over stressing the IMC and so the max RAM frequency goes down when you increase the Memory ranks.

My personal opinion if there is small difference in price between the 5700X and 5800X then go for the 5800X rather.

Thank you for the input. It will depend on any sales I find when the time comes. It should be my understanding that I probably won't find that they work even if I did a motherboard upgrade though?

B450 will accept Ryzen 5000 provided BIOS is up to date to include 5000 series support. I just went from a r7 2700 to a r5 5600 with 0 issues, simply installed new cpu and turned pc on and it booted into windows no problem
