Hello,
Im looking to buy a backup GPU [using 3090 right now] for when i sell my card before buying a new one.
Not for games since none come clsoe to what im used to, but i want windows in 4K 60 or 4K/120 [HDMI 2.1] to feel smooth.
And I need good video encoding [to keep re-encoding my 4K/HDR bluray rips], I know nvidia has one, im using it now its amazing, zero experince with ATI encoder and QuickSync.
I heard that quicksync is great, rivals nvidia?

P.S. my second PC [a home server] has 1030, just for windows 2D, 4K/60 and the PC feels sluggish [10400F, maybe becuase of the CPU? I ordered 12700 to replace]

Why don't you just buy the new GPU before you sell the old one? Removes the hamstringing yourself with the need for a iGPU when it comes to picking a processor.

You might find this video interesting:

If it (the IGP) can do the job, it is a lot cheaper than buying a 3050 or 6600.

By the way, what do you mean by 'sluggish'? The 10400F is perfectly capable of doing normal desktop stuff and should not feel slow to you.

You lose tons of money this way.
If you sell your old GPU just when new gen is announced but not sold yet, you maximize value
If you do it like you said, you minimize its value because new gen is already out

Thanks for the video.

That PC has GT1030, 10400f and 16gb ram, using windows just doesn't feel as smooth as my main PC, especially when i use windows remote connection and I even enabled GPU hardware acceleration thats why i got 1030 for it, i had old GT210 card before
with remote connection on gigabyte network, it doesn't feel smooth but when i just turn on the display and connect directly it also kinda meh, i dont know how to explain it just feels slow
Maybe because of 4K resolution, but its just windows, i dont do anything graphical

I ordered a 12700 for it, i hope it stays low power [hence the non K] and feels better

EDIT: So i watched this video before and sadly it shows low speed for 4K transcoding, he did 4k to 1080 [I do 4K high bitrate to 4K HEVC optimized] and he achived 2 streams, I only do one stream BUT 2 streams of 24fps movie = single encode at 48FPS, my 3090 does anywhere from 80fps to 110fps depending on source in 4K,10Bit, HEVC
From what I heard all nvidia GPUs have same encoder so even 3050 should be as fast as 3090 [need confirmation]

Tell that to the guy's who sold just before Ampere, prices went up not down.

The problem with selling first, is you have no GPU, get desperate, then buy from a scalper.

It's really hard to find benchmarks on this, I can find them between different generations, but not within the same generation. I believe that you're correct, they all have the same hardware (though nvidia sometimes uses different hardware, or none, on their lower-end GPUs), but I don't know if performance differs. I read that it can be programmed to use CUDA cores, but I don't know in what context and if it is actually any faster.

Scalpers prices are dang near gone at this point. It's so easy to find GPUs at MSRP now. The GPUs he mentioned can easily be picked up for cost. RX 6600 $369 and RTX 3050 can be had around $329

OP, could you clarify your goals here? I’m no expert, but my understanding is that for encoding videos you want to use software due to the quality. It’s slower, but ultimately produces better quality at the same bitrate.

For speed, hw works, but with that downside. Generally people test transcoding for their media servers, so it’s a pretty different use-case.

You might find this helpful. Unfortunately IDK what drives performance, but if you scroll through Reddit users seem to be able to transcode more streams with higher-end cards than with lower-end ones.
