I think the reason why they went that way is because of production costs (FPS costs a whole lot more to make) and expertise (Shadowrun Returns is much the same). I think they want to focus on telling a story (like Shadowrun Returns) and turn-based combat simplifies combat so they can focus on story.

I think that they're appealing to their own experience, as you've said. That's good, but it's disappointing that we'll get a turn based strategy before a competently executed FPS.

It's sad, but better than a lane defense tablet game. There is definitely a positive to the story.

I highly doubt it. If you remember back, the Xbox (I think 360) had a Mech Warrior game. It allowed people to get root access to their system, and since then has been a pariah. MS doesn't ever seem to forgive and forget.


I do hope you're right though. It'd justify the purchase of a flight stick, assuming Elite: Dangerous hadn't done so for you yet.

The games that came after MechWarrior 4 that were exclusive to console never sold well. They took a product that appealed to Windows gamers and put it on a platform with an audience that likely never even heard of the franchise. Microsoft doomed it from the start by excluding their core audience. What happened to the franchise is very much Microsoft to blame. They decided they're not going to invest their own developers into titles but that didn't stop them from licensing it out to other interested developers...

I take it back. The only reason why Microsoft would take interest is if they can make it into a successful Xbox title. That's been proven not to be true so the only way we'll get a true successor to MechWarrior 4 is by way of a studio like HBS that licenses it. I'd ask HBS if it has been considered but I think doing so now would be premature. They have to focus on BattleTech before they look beyond BattleTech. If HBS does venture in that direction, I bet Shadowrun would venture in that direction as well.

All I know is that I loved MechCommander, and that I used the pause button all the time, so turn-based won't be too different.
Besides, turn-based with a good story can be a great combo, think Jagged Alliance for instance...

No, Harebrained Schemes already secured the license to produce Battletech from Microsoft (they invested about $1,000,000 of their own money). They were planning on making the game regardless if the Kickstarter succeeded or failed. This Kickstarter is basically a preorder and the money they get from Kickstarter is going towards expanding the scope of the game prior to launch beyond what HBS could afford on its own.

Other than the license, Microsoft has nothing to do with it. Microsoft isn't paying HBS anything to make the game. Harebrained Holdings is publishing and Harebrained Schemes is developing.

I badly wanted to jump in on this, but I'm so far behind my gaming stack it's beyond pitiful. Still, glad HBS has a hold on it. They did alright by the Shadowrun remake.

Don't feel bad, that is the best way to game anymore imo. I never buy launch anymore, wait until half price or under and the inevitable 20 patches that every game seems to get, and then I play the game on actual launch day, nice and polished, for half price or less. lol

Confirmed, I might as well wait for winter sale and more updates/polish/content.

I can't wait to play it honestly, looks fun. I miss the days of Playstation 1 and 2, when I would just buy a game, play it, enjoy it, clap at the end, and be done with it. 30 patches not needed.

I did get 138 hours out of it but...the grind is real. Game could really use an expansion that adds more variety. I think at least one is planned already.

Post #22, HBS said Microsoft owns the rights to BattleTech and HBS licensed it from them. HBS secured the rights with their own funds before the Kickstarter started.

There are speed toggles now both as a global setting and as an at-your-will speed boost by pressing spacebar. The long pauses before and after actions has been shortened and there are tons of quality of life changes, many of which can alter the experience.

You can now set campaigns to provide extra loot, or make it extremely hard to get your hands on loot/new mechs, there is Ironman mode... etc etc etc. Battle difficulty is now closer to what the missions says it should be and encounters are more balanced in terms of heat management (you can do a bit more without overheat). Also, QoL changes for the shop and menus and customization options for the Mechwarriors themselves.

Battletech was already great @ launch but its really strong now. No reason to wait. The grindyness has been reduced due to the settings you can apply, making it much easier to collect all the mechs. You could already fix the slugginess of the game with a simple .ini file modification since launch which solved the one major issue the game really has.
