Hi, i know i need AMD cause it is the best at encryption cracking ( forensic work ).. obviously i would be best off with a very high end card like a R9 290 but i cant afford these being a student and the amount i have spent on my rig already as you can probably tell....

the question is am i better of getting a R9 270X for around £150 or am i better off getting a mid range R7 and saving for a R9 290?

thanks

In my opinion get the 270x and wait for next gen.

i would say hang on few more weeks, saving as you go, and then the 290 with after market cooling will be out :)

It depends on how fast you need a graphics card. If you need one right now, then I'd say yes, a 270X would suit you just perfectly fine for now. Save up a bit, sell the 270X later on, and pool together some money to get a R9 290. Sounds like a plan.

The GPU will not really be used much until next year for strong encryption brute force tests, i do like to play games though and yeah... my 6670 overheated (i think) and the hdmi port on the card does not work, yet the VGA does, havent tested DVI as ive lost my cables

i have a dual DVI output nvidia card somewere thats mid range i think which i also havent been able to test

Its basically having something thats playable right now, and something highpowered ( highest number of clocks and memory ) in 6-8 months

thanks

270x it will be plenty for regular gaming on your hdtv, if you ever need more performance, just turn of MSAA.

For your purposes, I honestly think you should get at least a R9 280X/HD7970. The R9 280X/HD7970 is a GPGPU number crunching beast of a card. I had a HD7970 I used for crunching before getting my GTX780ti. It alone was enough to keep me in the top ten for TPU's crunching team when we were getting GPGPU work units.

Agree, but after looking on new amd pricing, idk is it worth or not.... 200$ for 270x and 420$ for 280x.

AMD's prices have gone crazy lately, even if you settle for their reference models. I would wait until the non ref 290s come out and see how they compare in price and performance to the non ref OCed 780s, which can be had s low as $470 USD for top name brands.

In comparison to their older cards, the 270X ranks almost 10% faster than a 7870. Overclocking a 270X a little bit would get you past a 7950 in terms of performance which I think is pretty good for the price.

latest cards are having a safe overclock based on temperature , so it should not happen again . as you seem to need Mhz : you should start to watercool your pc . that needs a lot of money at the beginning with no experience .

my pc runs very cool to begin with ( 11 fans, all coolermaster and noctua 120mm ) im one of those who doesnt like watercooling... i have a h80 on my cpu and i only got that cause my big air cooler was custom and no fans fit it after the fan gave up...

Im thinking maybe stay low end until i can afford a 290x seen as encryption cracking is the same concept as bitcoin mining without going into detail

thanks
