I'm working on refurbishing some old computers and trying to get an old IDE drive to work on a Dell Optiplex GX 280 with two SATA connectors. When I plug in the old IDE drive to the SATA IDE converter the BIOS says device ID not recognized, thus I cannot use the IDE drive. Setting the BIOS to ATA mode rather than AHCI mode did not help any. The SATA drive worked on the same ports that the IDE one didn't. I have set the jumpers to master and cable select, neither of which helped any. Trying different IDE drives didn't help anything either.
I suspect the problem has to with a cheap converter.
The converter is a cheap $5
Any thoughts on what I could do?
