So, I've an older Acer (yeah, well, it works ok, lol) and it's got an onboard Broadcom NetXtreme Gigabit Ethernet. I've got two different networks at the office, and I use a USB Ethernet for the second, and yesterday, I started having some issues. My builtin traffic stopped trafficking. Took me a little to figure out what had happened, but I still haven't sorted out why, so I'm in here asking for some troubleshooting assistance.

Symptoms:

LAN.JPG

No outgoing traffic on that port
IPV4 and IPV6 (not used currently) show No Internet Access
Network shows as Public, and Unidentified with No internet Access
**Says it's a Gigabit Ethernet port, but in Speed and Duplex, only shows up to 100Mb Full available. I've never had a need to ensure this used to say Gb available, either before or after driver update, so not sure this is related

Here's what I've done so far.

Swapped the connection between the two networks, and the problem stays with the card, so it's not the router, or the cable.
Disabled and re-enabled, rebooted, removed and allowed to re-add.
Restarted in Safe mode with networking
Removed device and updated the driver.
Disabled the firewall completely, not running 3rd party firewall atm

Running out of ideas. I'm researching how to tell if it's a hardware or software issue, just looking for some ideas on what to try next. Thanks, guys!

Win7 x64, same response both DHCP and Static IPv4, IPv6 disabled currently, initially was enabled.

See post 2 (LAST) MS Update

Try automatic instead of static?

Thanks, DHCP enabled normally, tried it both ways. Also, I hadn't tried the MS Update, definitely a newer driver, but almost no change. I did see that it was showing connected at Gigabit after I changed drivers, but still no traffic out.

Any recent router changes? ( stop using MAC address filtering )

You could jump to free upgrade Windows 10 1909 : https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10

Did you check Adapter Property Settings, Configure, Advanced: Like these fields: WITH A REBOOT

Check "Power Management" field as well (don't use power save)

Sorry, disabled Power management already, no router changes and like I said, two separate networks, same problem.
I've checked several things in the advanced config, anything specific you're looking for?

If you already removed adapter NIC via Device Manager and rebooted, so OS finds new hardware and installs adapter NIC, then, no.

But I would try that again now that you installed a newer Driver.

Have you also tried "Forgetting known networks" and re-entering SSID and Password from scratch?

Have you removed the CAT cable and smelled the port?

I'll uninstall and delete the driver again, and do a full reboot, which I haven't done for at least a couple of changes. It's not a wireless network, haven't smelled the port yet.

If you are not doing Full Reboots after these changes then that could be the issue.

I'm not talking about removing the driver but uninstalling hardware via Device Manager.

Uninstall Device : below AND REBOOT

How about step #1: check if you are getting a correct IP address and not some random gibberish.
Also, have you tried the typical stuff like:
Code:
ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew

Additionally, if you are using any kind of tunneling software, VPN or if you have a VM bridged to your physical network - try switching it off.

Yup, sorry, did all those. set a static, etc. while I do have 2 Windows VPN connections set, they aren't active, and the other network conenction works fine. I'm inclined to think it's a hardware issue at this point.

I've done several reboots, but not after every single change. Some of them, like going from Static to DHCP and back, disabling, changing speed connection settings, don't require reboots to take effect, and yes, when I say removed it, I mean removed the device via Device Manager. It's been a couple of changes since reboot tho, taking it down again.

Load up some live Linux CD/DVD/USB, change cable and switch, and if its still not working, NIC is fried.
Yeah, I need to try a boot disc. Hadn't done it yet, meant to after the Safe mode with networking, but got distracted. I'll give that a whiz, thanks for reminding.

edit: Well that answers that. Booted an Elementary build, and the network is up, so I'm going to dig in a little deeper. Going to make a new profile first, as that would be the easiest recovery at this point. Thanks guys :toast:

Try it in Linux and see how good it does
