I was thinking of getting one of these..

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834147654

http://www.xoticpc.com/asus-m70saa1-customizable-laptop-order-p-2380.html

Which one would you recommend? I read somewhere that
some video cards will not output 1080p when viewing blu-ray's
through the hdmi out. If so I would rather get the ASUS over the
HP.

I am mainly going to be using this computer for
making music. I also wanted to play Emu's and
some PC games but that is not so important.
I wanted a Blu-ray player too but its not worth it
to me if the video card cannot display 1080p while
playing blu-ray's through the hdmi output.

I was looking at this one too when considering my options but it doesn't have
a number pad which is essential to me when using my music making programs..

Thanks CrackerJack, do you think I can upgrade to the T7500 later on?

No, Its hard to change a laptop's processor.

agree with mullered07, a number pad would maybe be easier.

Yeah upgrading cpu in laptops are not that easy, more of a pain then anything!

I'm taken apart laptops and replaced processors.. its the same thing as a desktop, only removal of like 50 screws is involved. As far as brand and such.. what's your budget? I highly reccomend the Asus G and M series...

Yeah, which music program are you talking about?

A USB Numpad runs very cheap, or you could buy a whole, full sized external keyboard. I use one when I'm at home.

Also, customize an HP on their site for cheap, tad more expensive than Dell, but having opened up numerous laptops, the construction quality is much better, as are the components.

Especially when it comes to audio.

My Compaq has usable Altec Lansings.

My mom's Acer has cheap offbrand Chinese shit.

My best friend's Dell speakers blew when he turned them up past 75% and are now ruined.

Well my budget is in the 1200-1500 range. I like the m70 because it meets all my
needs plus it looks very classy and professional. The G series is a better performer
but looks geared towards a younger crowd.

My goal is to buy a laptop that can do everything my desktop can do
(no less) while maintaining a sleek, classy look and be as portable as
possible. That is why I really want one with a built-in number pad.

My desktop specs are

Pentium d 940
3gb 667mhz ddr2
500gb 7200 rpm
Nvidia Geforce 7600 gt 256mb ram

Those specs run all of my software perfectly, so anything a little better
will be good enough for me since I really don't need more but it would
be nice to know if i do need the power in the future it is there.
I don't do any gaming other than EMU's s and all of my programs
recommended requirements are pentium 2.0 ghz and 1gb of ram.

I could just get the m70sa-a1 with the t8100 option from factory rather
than the t5550 but it is a 250 dollar difference.

You can stash a number pad in your bag, assuming you put it in a bag, rather than carry it openly wherever you go.

Obviously if you're that concerned with aesthetics, you need to get the one aimed at the younger crowd.

I use Reason 4.0 and Nuendo 3 with a bunch of plugins. Sometimes I use them
simultaneously which uses a lot of CPU power on my P4 but my PD940 runs them
very efficiently. The ASUS M70 uses good components and I usually use
headphones when trying to be quiet or trying to listen very well.

The reason for getting a laptop with the num-pad is so there will be less
clutter while using it. I want to be able to be as portable as possible.

Thanks for the input.. :toast:
