Ok, so here's my rig I'm planning on buying:
CPU: AMD FX-6300 3.5GHz 6-Core Processor
CPU Cooler: Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO 82.9 CFM Sleeve Bearing CPU Cooler
Motherboard: Asus M5A97 LE R2.0 ATX AM3+ Motherboard
RAM: Kingston Fury Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1600 Memory
GPU: Radeon R9 270

Ok, so as you saw I am buying an after market cooler. I am trying to reach 4 GHz, which is only a .5 Increase from the stock frequency. I know that this setup is overclock-able, but I need to know what I would need to type into the Bios fields, and any extra information that might affect my ability to overclock, or just things I need to know.

That's a really bad motherboard for overclocking. You should get this as a minimum

http://www.microcenter.com/product/416846/970_Extreme3_R20_Socket_AM3_ATX_AMD_Motherboard

preferably this

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...-na-_-na&cm_sp=&AID=10446076&PID=3938566&SID=

Also what is your total budget? Maybe we can make better build
I have a smaller budget, aiming for $400-450. Is the first Mobo compatible with what I have?

Also, I'm only overclocking half a GHz. Are you saying it's so bad it can't even do that?

yes it can't even do that. It will overheat. The second board after MIR and using the -$10 promo code is $75 or only $5 more than your board

Not much on the AMD side since Thunderbird (AMD K7) but good-great overclocking goes hand in hand with a good budget to lots of $$. On the Intel side, good to heavy overclocking is synonymous with spend more money. lol

Ok, so will both of them be able to do at least .5 GHz?

But it has built in overclocking features?

It will overclock 500Mhz and probably more...depending on cpu. Anyways if it does require more voltage, ghetto mod the board by putting a fan directly over the vregs/mosfets. Done. However there are far better motherboards out there for around the same price point that will push your cpu further provided you can power and cool everything properly.

Ok. Can someone tell me if I can get at least 4.0 GHz with http://www.microcenter.com/product/416846/970_Extreme3_R20_Socket_AM3_ATX_AMD_Motherboard
Or, can I get it with the one I am aiming on buying. I am buying an after market cooler, if you read the first thing I posted you would know, so I am asking if using that, can I achieve 4.0 GHz. That's all I want. I'm not worried about noise or anything, I just want a motherboard that is $75 or less that can overclock my processor, with a cooler to help it out. I need a guarantee that something is going to work. The motherboard I was thinking of buying first apparently has built in features for overclocking, but too many people are confusing me.

OOOOHK
I just learned the LE version has no heat-sync. Alright I think Ill get the non LE version. Or something better I find.

Is there a problem with the board krusha selected for you? It's inexpensive and will do what you want...

Ok let's try it to make it simpler:

  • Asus M5A97 LE R2.0 - Cost $70 - Supports AMD FX 6300 - When overclocked the socket will heat up as the surface of the sun and will collapse on itself going supernova and smoke will come out from all vents from your case resulting in a pc looking like this

  • Asrock 970 Extreme3 - Cost $60 after MIR - Supports AMD FX 6300 - Have mild overclocking capabilities and 4GHz should be achievable but a fan may be needed on the vrm heatsinks to push harder
  • Asrock Fatal1ty 970 Performance - Cost $76.5 after MIR - Supports not only FX 6300 but also 220W CPUs like FX 9590 & 9370 - Will overclock like there is no tomorrow. Or when you CPU hits a thermal limit. Whatever comes first. Usually the latter comes first

Used m4a89GTD PRO.

..just throwing some good OCing boards out there..
GTD PRO was going for about $50 used..
was..
I'd rather buy a quality used board than a mm..not as robust one new.

I am thinking about getting a cheaper board, it is the GA-78LMT-USB3, but I don't know if it can actually overclock. Please help.

If you want to have a stable overclock, you either need a bigger budget, or you need to buy a second hand better board. Half of those 760G/budget 970 socket boards are not designed for frivolous overclocking.

I'd also like to know what poor bugger of a PSU you intend to use.

I think I have a 600 or 750W psu, my uncle gave me my r9 270 and my psu.

@krusha03 's choice is ideal in my opinion.

I have a Gigabyte 970 A ds3 that is marginally cheaper

it clocks my Athlon ii x4 640 from 3.ghz to 3.5 with ease and stays cool. They go on ebay UK for £ 20 - 30 2nd user.

When i made my purchase if i had the money i would have looked at the 990 chipset range but they are approx twice the price.

That pictures doesn't seem to match what is on the Giga website?
http://www.gigabyte.com/products/product-page.aspx?pid=4385#ov

Did they upgrade that old board not made for octo cores to suddenly have double the power phases and also support the CPU?
http://www.gigabyte.com/support-downloads/cpu-support-popup.aspx?pid=4297

Am I missing something?

@krusha03 mine is rev 1.1 cheap, cheerful, does the job, there are revisions with different chokes i believe. The rev 2. 0 is 8 + 2 phase.

Why ask for advise then ask again about an even crappier item. The board he originally spec'd out for you is the BEST choice with your budget and any other board you bring up will not come close to the features that one has for the money you are willing to spend.
