You will be surprised how much things can be different at the computer end, including Microsoft. There are plenty of APO's (basically software DSP), that are placed only on analogue.
Lets say the APO's improve general audio quality (regardless of analogue), and you then compared SPDIF out (no extra APO's), to analogue out (with APO's).
Most GPU audio drivers will setup the device to use Microsoft APO's, which can then be different to what you get with a Realtek-Other.
APO's process PCM, and they are placed at the point ALL devices process PCM in software (SFX, MFX, EFX).
