I just bought a io gear usb hub and to my surprise whenever I plug it in and power on my comp, it only goes thru the bios then when it tries to load windows, it doesn't, just shows the letters, no windows 7 picture thingy moving and then just sits there. if i unplug it, everything is fine. any ideas how to fix? kind of a pain to unplugged just to start then replug after.

Check boot order, make sure the hub/whatever is not being set as the first boot device. Other than that, if it has a power switch, turn it off until needed!

I have an Aluratek USB2.0/SATA dock. if it's plugged in, or if I have one of my USB 3,0 drives plugged in, boot will either fail, or take an eternity. Hardware incompatibilites still happen, unfortunately.

dang that sucks! well the usb hub was cheap haha. guess im stuck then.

I'd say with the varied plethora of stuff on the market and especially with the software often required to run them it's amazing these types of things aren't more common!

USB has to be the most problematic interface I've ever run into for issues like this. Some devices..might work on one board, might not on another, and on yet another, it's touch and go.

Sometimes a BIOS conflict is the problem, so it's always a good idea to let OEMs know when you run into issues like this, but I've found that more often than not, you just need to deal with it.

Did you try a different port?
Have you tried letting windows boot then plugging it in?
Does it require power... did you hook up the power to the hub?
Is it a card reader,too?
Which model?

Oooh oooh I know! Unplug it!

Strange I have a generic hub always plugged and doesn't give any problems, even I can boot from it when I plug a USB drive.
I don't understand this "just shows the letters, no windows 7 picture thingy moving and then just sits there"

what do these letters say? are you referring the POST screen? seems like you have a USB drive plugged in into the hub

it doesn't need its own power, its an iogear generic one that i got from a bookstore lol, 4 ports. tried different ports on my comp and such no worky :( works only if i uplug it and let windows boot up then i can use it from there.

edit:
you know how when windows starts to load theres some letters saying "starting windows" or whatever and theres that windows logo that glows? well i dont get that logo that glows, just the white words at the bottom.

OK so then it hangs in the middle of Windows booting, then I am thinking these is some nasty compatibility error with your motherboard because it hangs after booting from hard disk, I though at first that the motherboard was trying to boot from the hub then it hanged there in the POST.

If this issue annoys you maybe try to return it and choose another brand and see if the problem doesn't happen anymore

Sounds like it is making it through the post, but is hanging when windows is loading.
You may just have a conflict in the resources allocated or a driver that is in conflict.

Or, you got a defective one. I believe they have a three year warranty, but, since you just bought it return it to the store, and get another; or, like Derek12 said... try a different brand.
Just me personally, I am not that fond of IO Gear's quality control when it come to electronics.
As I had a card reader from them that went into meltdown. I got it for a few bucks and they wanted me to sent to them for study... on my dime. Would have cost more to sent it than I paid for it.
When I finally got it apart, it look like amateur night in a soldering class. Poor solder joints and globs of solder. Someone seemed to be cutting costs on that board. :ohwell:

shall try to return it to the store then thanks guys :) hopefully i can find one that works good if not im just gonna order one from amazon or something haha. (theres only like 3 usb hubs here :/ )

I cant boot with my camera plugged in.. some things are just weird

Don't sweat it. Sometimes it just doesn't agree.

Check your boot order. That MIGHT help.

Yeah I have a NUMBER of external USB drive cases - Some you CAN boot with if they are plugged in - and some you cant - it just hangs at boot forever.

As others have said - there are SO many different revisions and firmware versions and so on - it really is quite common for certain things to just not agree with ones exact specific bios and firmware versions at boot.

so i tried my friend's hub and it doesn't work just like mine (his was different brand). Ended up fiddling with the bios settings and disabled this one setting under USB config, called ECHI handoff or something (description had something about OSes, so i assumed that might fix windows not booting) and to my surprise its all good now :)

Good news mate :) - It's always nice to resolve these issues as often with this exact type of problem many people never manage to find the exact cause - Depending on so many many factors its often almost impossible to trace.

Does that disable the USB 2.0 support?

No the usb 2.0 support is the main setting. This one is only a sub setting.

That wasa good catch. I had considered that, but never thought that would really be it. thanks very much for letting us know how you sorted it!

Noticed you found the option in the BIOS.

I've noticed the occasional USB boot glitches when plugged in to some of the ports. On the P67 and Z68 boards, the USB 3.0 charge ports would cause this. Plugging in to one of the regular black ports has remedied this most of the time but not always.

It also happens on some of the red combo-USB ports. Swapping ports helped. I only run in to this because these are typically one of the systems in the test review.
