If you have a family video near you they will repair your disc for a couple bucks, or did what i did when my oblivion disc was scratched to hell: use a little brasso and an old tshirt and rub in a circle till you lessen the scratches so your drive can read it. then i recommend making an iso of it afterwards. or worse comes to worse torrent another copy, as you own oblivion you are the 1% who can legally torrent a copy of it.

Had this happen to me a while back around when Oblivion first came out. I moved my computer from one room to another forgot I had the disk in there and when I turned on my computer I heard this awful noise. Turned out it was my Oblivion DVD rotating incorrectly. Scratched up the entire outside rim of the disk and my computer wouldn't read it.

Long story short. I used this that my Cuz has. I was so happy and surprised that my PC would now read the disk despite that whole part being dark with scratches.

If none of the cheap methods work you could try that. If you do get fixed copy all the data from the DVD to a folder called Oblivion and then make that an ISO and burn it. Thats what I did.

Or you could get the game again off of a certain bay if you feel really cheap.

Download from torrents, and use your key.

Download from torrents, and use your key.

My last bit of recommendation hehe. Best part is, the game uses no key. :D

I had this happen when I bought the title on release. I dropped the disc before ever installing, and gave it a good round scuff. They must have used really poor quality discs!

For bad scratches, you can use normal white toothpaste...which is really just a finely-grained polishing compound. Just make sure to rub not in circles, but from the inner edge of the disc to hte outter edge, in very straight lines(most readers can "adjust" for scratches against the read path, but scrathes along the readpath cannot be "adjusted" for).

Well im going to try the touthpaste if that doesn't work then i may go down to the local bay, as im not going to buy anything i don't have

The crc error is kind-of a developer's fault which happens if you install the game on a system where it had already been installed and uninstalled before. It had happened to me personally and my disk is fine...

To manage without having to reinstall windows, try it - at the best you'd save buying a new disk and at the worst it might not work and no harm would be done...

1.) Go to Add/remove programs and uninstall Oblivion (If it shows on the list). If the add/remove procedure results in an error - skip to the next step and continue as it will still remove the game with the remaining steps.

2.) After or If the uninstall finishes go to Start - Run - type regedit - hit Enter - click on the + sign next to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE, click on the + sign next to SOFTWARE, click on the + sign next to BETHESDA SOFTWORKS, right click on Oblivion (if it is still there) and then delete.

3.)Now still in Regedit find HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\{35CB6715-41F8-4F99-8881-6FC75BF054B0} and delete it the same way you deleted oblivion in the last step.(If it is still there - this is the uninstall key for add\remove programs)

4.)close regedit.

5.)Go into explorer find the C:\Program Files\Bethesda Softworks\Oblivion folder (if it is still there) and delete it.

6.)find the folder C:\Documents and Settings\USERNAME\My Games\Oblivion (Substitute your username for USERNAME) and delete it (Again if it is still there)

By doing this it will delete all traces of the game from your computer.

Now you can install the game :) hopefully without getting crc problems.

If deleting the stuff from the registry doesn't work or you're still getting uninstallation errors, one way that I used to get around it was to go into Safe Mode and run the setup.exe file from the disc. IIRC it asks you if you want to reinstall the game...so go ahead and reinstall it.

well i got slightly further after using some toothpaste what all do i need to fix it? just rub toothpaste on then? wash with water or leave a very small amount on disc to fill the scratch?

Just buff out the scratch. I never said it would be easy, but it will work, if you work for it.

Data is actually on the back side of the label. So the laser needs to reach it. Any scratch can be buffed out(almost), as long as it isn't on the label side.

Even the nasty XBOX360 groove...although those take soem real serious work(dremel, toothpaste, and white buffing tip ;). I don't suggest that unless it's really super bad though, and you are willing to lose the disc.).

There's been a few that I've used some purple filler stuff on(GOOP!), that dries nice and clear, but always toothpaste first.

well i have decide sense i cant get it to work im going to buy it off Ebay there is currently game of the year going for $0.99 3 hours left. and plz no one else bid :) lol

argh :banghead:you have a cyclic redundancy error, i know that problem so well:cry:

best thing is to make sure it ain't your dvd/cd drive going down the pan first (as that can also cause that error to rear it's ugly head)

i've actually had several game discs do that before (usually from a mate of mine called glen )
some that seem perfectly ok (i'e no scratches on either the data side or the plastic bit the laser shines through ) basicaly a dead disc

as some others have said if you can download it do so, i've got a lot of my dead discs bought back from the dead that way (obviously torrenting holds risks, so if you do, don't share or reupload data that way the authorities can't give you a spanking

(i see you have your eye on a disc from a certain place ;) good luck i hope you get it, and it's ok ;)

The toothpaste polish worked perfectly, even though I had a scratch on the label side. I guess it barely scratched it because all I needed to do was clean up the bottom side scratches and it worked. Thanks for the info! Sorry for bumping the old one btw, just wanted to add a "problem solved" in case others had this same problem. Fyi, you gotta polish it for a good bit to get it nice and glossy, just don't go crazy with the pressure ;)

Well ain't this just a old thread of mine. I should add that after I used toothpaste i did get further in the install but it never ended up working luckily my friend called me one day and asked me if I got it to work I said No. My friend was throwing out a old Oblivion and instead shipped it to me.
