Hey all... I'm trying to change the Edit command on the context menu in Vista. I know you can get programs that edit this stuff, but I only want to change it for jpegs so I can load photoimpact easily (don't say "get photoshop", I'm just used to photoimpact). So ideally I would just find the registry entry and change it, but can't find it :(

Anyone know how?

I'm not sure exactly where it would be in Vista but under XP, it is at Control Panel -> Folder Options -> File Types tab. Find the extension you want to change and click on the Advanced button. Edit "edit" and you can change which application it runs with what parameters

That is where you go in Vista also. However, you might have to go to Organize -> Layout -> Menu Bar before the "Tools" option shows up.

No that option doesn't exist in vista, its something the geniuses at MS decided to leave out.

Well, basically all that form does is modify the registry...but it isn't easy.

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.<EXTENSION>\OpenWithProgids\<APPLICATION>

This key must contain a value pointing to the application you want to use...

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\<APPLICATION>\shell\edit\command

Under (default) value, it needs data something like this:

"%PROGRAMFILES%\PhotoImpact.exe" "%1"

I think that'll do it.

Worked perfectly, thanks a lot buddy

W00t! That was a shot in the dark.

In Vista you can go to Control Panel > Default Programs > Set Associations (Associate a file type...)

Here you can set which program will open different file types.

EDIT: You can also go to the Set Default Programs and here you can set Photoimpact to be the default for all the file types it can handle.

@ Oily, thanks but that's not what I'm trying to do here. I wanted the "Edit" context menu command to open a different program to what the file is usually associated with; the Default Programs dialog doesn't allow that.

Ok I see what you mean...you want "Open" and "Edit" to be associated with two separate programs.

I know that in my context menu that if I choose "Open With" I can then choose from say CS4/Paint/IrfanView/Windows Photo Gallery etc and choose the appropriate program for my task.

But anyway.. the regedit is also a good way to know for future reference.
