This really looks like it could be world changing. Imagine a phone that never needs charging, or drones with unlimited flight time, and electric cars with unlimited range.

Well it seems it will be upto 1w next year and it's possible to use multiple batteries linked, so 5 years possibly and they will be a game changer. At least it's a start and i don't see anything near this from anywhere else. Imo it's pretty special

While this is cool, it isn't particularly novel; the USA and USSR have used radioisotopic decay to power spacecraft and lighthouses for decades.

Nor is it particularly useful; 0.1W won't power even a smartphone and their 1W goal requires them to increase the efficiency up to ten times, and/or potentially use more radioactive material - which would make the battery larger. So I'm not sure exactly what market they're aiming at.

This seems pretty safe to me, no radiation emitted from the device. When they have them upto 5w, and considering the size now, it won't be that big. Just consider even a shoebox size battery that would poer your car for 50 years with no radiation, no danger from it being puntured. Don't judge this on the micro size 1mw it is now, but what it will be. Every breakthrough has to start somewhere.

While interesting with a battery that could last 50 years and that would be great if it could lets say powering a car or more stuff like a smartphone.

However i am not that knowledge of this. But nuclear and a battery you have close to yourself. I think radiation exposure and radiation sickness. So do i really want this thing in my smartphone or car. I am not so sure i want to, even if the radiation levels are harmless also over longer periods of time. Just the thoughts of a nuclear thing close to my body, makes think no apselutely not.

Stop falling for those crowdfunding/publicity scams. Betavoltaic devices are available since the seventies and, while certainly useful for very niche applications, they are in the microwatt range. To power anything reasonable you need an RTG, like a 2kg, 52W SNAP-3 running on plutonium 238. Good luck with that...

How so? A few microwatts is useless for anything practical. Also, as I noted, those batteries are available for decades now, you can buy a tritium battery from City Labs and a few other manufacturers. Selling them as "new and revolutionary" is a scam, especially when suggesting usage in consumer devices. They're just looking for gullible, ignorant people for a quick cash grab. Which is a normal business practice nowadays, especially in the crowdfunding space, i guess.

Except these don't use tritium so not the same. These also don't pose any radioactive threat as stated that they can be used for a pacemaker inside the body. Could a tritium type? nope. The output might only be small now, but they will make it bigger. As i said, this is 15mmx15mm, so even if a 10w type is 5 times bigger it would still only be 75x75mm which is still pretty good.

That one is a radioisotope-thermoelectric-battery, or R-T-B. This one takes "thermo" out of the equation, so it can hardly be called similar. I imagine (probably wrongly) that the electrode simply collects electrons from beta decay and sends them down the wire, but what then closes the electric circuit?

I'm gonna try and keep my eye on this, to see if it is real. it has attracted a lot of news interest, so maybe this time it might be. If it hadn't i would be scoffing at it, but it has, so we shall see i guess.

Don't really understand the negativity, if it is real it's the battery breakthrough we have needed for a long time.

Another of those inventions with minimum innovation but portraying a huge dream.
Literally every startup company does these kind of shit, they come up with a slightly new idea, they claim it's gonna change the world, people invest in them, years later nothing still changed.
You just think it is a breakthrough because you've never seen an atomic battery before.
