codecs

well, i'm on a trip, and I brought 2 dvd's, and 2 movies in .avi. our portable dvd player is a pos, so my notebook is the best option for movies. unfortunetly, it doesn't have codecs for "backup" dvds, or .avi that used to be dvds. at home, divx solved all of my problems in vista, but in xp... rather less. iv tried quicktime, windows media player, real player, nero player, and divx player. divx could give me video, but it said that it needs the directdraw codec or something for sound. I don't have time to look, and I have a 9-year-old who wants movies NOW. any ideas? this is a problem for both dvd and .avi. (the portable player is fine for the dvds)

.avi isn't a codec, far from all .avi's are encoded in DivX, just download some codec pack (google codec pack) and it'll most likely contain the right codec.

download the Combined Community Codec Pack. it's what i use

The first thing to download would be the 'K-Lite codec pack'. You could also try the 'VLC Media Player'.

For direct DVD (original or backup) playback, PowerDVD is pretty reliable (but it isnt free unless you look in the right places

)

also make sure to download "ac3" sound codec, you will need it.

I like using these ones K-Lite Codec Pack ( http://www.free-codecs.com/download/K_Lite_Mega_Codec_Pack.htm ). Which is what peach1971 posted too. Never had a problem with them.

I use the CCCP religiously. If you watch a lot of anime, the K-Lite pack can have filter conflicts on certain file types.
