Hi all,
I have a 5 year old Acer Aspire m5711 and the computer sometimes boots normally but other times does not (vacuum loud fan and computer doesn't startup).

This site thread explains quite well:
http://www.techpowerup.com/forums/threads/computer-wont-boot-but-has-power.189495

The problem is that it only happens sometimes but in my case the power button always lights up.

Here is my video:
http://youtu.be/AxSz7Gb7Fi4

Unplugging the ethernet cable and hitting power button would normally fix.

Workaround steps:
1) I power up (result: loud fan won't boot)
2) I shut down
3) I unplug the motherboard ethernet cable
4) I power up (result: loud fan won't boot)
5) I shut down
6) I power up (result: success)

I replaced the motherboard with a clone a few months ago but it didn't fix. :(
What about that?
Thanks for reading this.

Maybe the video card is no longer seated right \ fully, might want to take it out and while your at it get a can of compressed air to clean the slot and the rest of the system including the psu.

Check the pins on the display connectors at both ends and for any dirt\dust.

And...

Does the mainboard have a speaker on it? If so are there any POST codes beeping?

Even though it's powering up I would suspect the PSU might be a culprit here...do you have another one you could try?

You state that you remove the Ethernet cable...do you have Wake On Lan set for any reason? What if you skip step 3 in your workaround steps? Does it still boot? Have you tried booting with just a keyboard, screen and power supply connected? (CPU and 1 stick of memory)

That should be the base line hardware required for a bootable system...if it boots there add an HDD, if it boots add the CD/DVD. Etc...

Probably the PSU if you already swapped the motherboard and it runs fine once successfully booted.

Kursah, that 6 steps are granted it always boots at the 6th step (sometimes at the 4th) and I have to remove the ethernet cable every time otherwise I'll have to do countless steps, that's a fact. I do not have Wake On Lan set.

I would still say try a different PSU... here is a solid budget power supply:

http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00H33SDR4/?tag=tec06d-20

Interesting with the NIC connection...not sure what to make of that. What are your system specs? Make/Model of all your components? Check my system spec's for an example.

Honestly I would do process of elimination to another step...and that step would be the PSU. If nothing changes after that..I would try to force flash the CMOS if possible..to ensure no corruptions lie within that.

I would also try as I suggested above and try to boot with minimal hardware... you need an STDIN...Keyboard, STDOUT...VGA, CPU, stick of RAM and power to be able to perform POST on the mainboard. So starting with that would be a great place to go next.

If nothing changes..depending on what you're running a different CPU might be the next step... by the time you're done...you might have built a different PC. But you'll also have more experience in PC diagnostics which is a huge plus for odd issues like these...wish it was in front of me so I could examine and diagnose.

i had a delta 250W with my acer machine that could push 500W easy and still works today after 7 years.... but maybe i am just lucky :p

also make sure that your ethernet cable does not carry AC current. this sometimes happen since the routers are out in the rain and all.

last make sure your pc has a good earthing connection. connect a light bulb (100W) to the live hole of your outlet and the other one into the earthing. if the light glows... it means earthing is fine. if not. then you need to redo your house's electricals.

Well he is having a problem that wasnt solved with a mobo replacement, so it could be the psu, power switch, power chord, power strip, wall outlet, ground, breaker. Oem companies are always trying to cut corners so they find the minimum psu and its usually a Piece of Shit.

Just to let you know that the issue is being very common now and not yet solved.
Problem: CPU fan at maximum speed
May be contraditorious but now that ambient temps are low the CPU fan starts spinning crazy
