Matts made quite a lot of cool shstuff in the past. I'm surprised to see him mentioned here, but moreso surprised (and disappointed) to see people here are throwing him shade. he deserves more appreciation. just because he may have a penchant for particular hardware (server psu's and ultra high CRI leds) and just because he conveys an unconventional modding approach, doesn't mean that he's not talented.

As someone that DIYs a lot more than my PCs I've seen a bunch of his stuff and all of it is impressive in one way or another at the very least. His DIY Bluetooth speaker was a cool one, and looks like something somone could replicate.

He's obviously a smart and talented dude, and really the only fault I could put on any of his endeavors is the practicality of some of his projects and this is one of those, as insanely awesome as the end result is I doubt anyone else is going to replicate it. I'm just glad it turned out for him cause there were multiple points where things just could have not worked out and you'd have a shit load of copper and wasted time. Someone with CNC access could probably build a case and block kit but even that would probably be a incrediblely niche product.

One thing that confused me though was how the first PS5 board died. Shouldn't it just have gone into thermal protection and shutdown instead of dieing like that?

I have seen his stuff before, he does do neat stuff from time to time. My issue was the ram temps... I had no idea the original PS5 had ram that hit 94 Celsius... cause all the reviews I read showed differently.

Also, I have to question Sony quality control... allowing PS5 ram to hit 94 celsius is an atrocity... they should have discovered that very early on in the RND phase of the PS5... kind of mindblowing...

Yeah, it's pretty wild, did you see the water cooled camera, what that ones thermals was like before it was modded, kinda not fit for purpose the way some things are built these days.

you think it should, but the silicone was cooked, even on x86 pc's - the thermal protections are never a guarantee safeguard. if you let one go beyond tjmax (while yes, the cpu should throttle or even self shutdown) that heat, and its enough to still do damage. those thermal protections might save some chips from dying completely per each over heat incidence, but even the ones that do survive are never the same afterward (the silicone suffers from electron-migration due to the heat and is artificially aged as a result).

I feel that way when i see some of his stuff, moreso for the practical projects (artificial sun, etc) I always wanted to do the fresnel lense fake windows from old TVs, those are amazing. But also i realise that practical or not, his projects have uniqueness that would also be a factor towards its value, because a bunch of it is slightly above the effort any average hobbyist would go to. I dunno, maybe im just slack

No, not really. Some companies actually do their due diligence before product release. Sony was "competing" with microsoft and didn't want to be beaten to market to badly. The PS5 is the Sega Saturn of the modern day, except with better software on release.

No. It was a very similar situation. And for the record, the Sega Saturn did 3D too and better than the PS1 all day long. Bit I digress, we're off topic..
