Wrong thread.

Replace thermal paste and/or get a cooling pad, otherwise temps are good.

If this are load temperatures, they are very good for a notebook.

If those are load temps its fine as stated above ,
if not then you should open the laptop and clean the cooler + replace the paste ,
have a laptop and it has to be done about once every year.

I disagree with replacing the paste - especially in a notebook. TIM (thermal interface material) does not need to be replaced unless the cured bond has been broken. No where does any TIM maker, cooler maker, notebook maker, PC maker or CPU maker say regular replacement of TIM is necessary. TIM will easily last 10 years or longer - again, as long as the cured bond remains in tact.

Notebooks inherently have cooling issues. They can pack the power of a PC into a notebook but not the cooling. Considering even a tower PC case can be challenged to keep the innards cool, that is no surprise. Your temps are pretty warm but not hot. You should attempt to clean out all the dust with compressed air.

Since when is "mortar" known as a good heat conductor, especially the junk many companies apply in assembly?

Paste ages and if you dont believe me you haven't disassembled enough old (4-5+ years) PCs and GPUs. Sometimes you really find "paste" that has more in common with mortar, than with anything else.

Ofc with notebooks you usually gain more from cleaning out dust congested fans and intakes.

You can see by the link in my sig that I've been around electronics long enough as a formally trained technician to have a clue about TIM.

If TIM needed regular replacement, the TIM makers would say so. So I ask, show us where any TIM maker, CPU maker, aftermarket cooler maker recommends regular TIM replacement. They don't, because again, if the bond is not broken, it does not need replacement.

Show us a white paper, or professional article that says that TIM goes bad after a couple years and needs replacing. Not a post from another forum poster who, as a hobby, plays around with computers. But a real electronics journal. I would love to read it.

The purpose of TIM is to displace insulating air in the microscopic pits and valleys of the mating surfaces. And since the best, most efficient transfer of heat occurs with direct metal to metal contact, it is only the pits and valleys that matter.

And so what if it dries out? Even if the TIM dries out, the solids that remain are still occupying that space.

Don't believe me? Then please note what the experts say and see The Heatsink Guide: Info about thermal compound and note the following (my bold added),
Thermal compound normally does not get hard, it will stay sticky for years. But depending on the solvents used in the making of the compound, it may dry over the years. This is not a reason to worry; it will still do its job when dry, and there is no reason to replace dried thermal compound.

IF it was necessary to regularly replace TIM, don't you think the TIM makers would say so? After all, that would mean more money for them. But they don't say to regularly replace it because they know it is NOT necessary - unless again, the bond was broken. Of if it was applied improperly to begin with - like using too much.

im getting real sick of this...

if not then you should open the laptop and clean the cooler + replace the paste ,
nice option, i have done it several times, cleaning the crappy applied paste and then re applying new paste, for sure you will get a notable difference there, also clean out all fans, fins and ducts inside the computer, laptops/netbooks are comnly affected by dust inside them,
remember clean it properly, use arctic cleaner, if not, get a nearest drugstore, ask for isopropyl alcohol and clean it,

also you can use a cooling pad for laptops, take a look:

@jacob300 - I apologize for these totally unnecessary distractions. Some people seem to think only they are allowed to speak.

I do agree the use of a cooling pad with notebooks is good idea. I recommend a notebook cooling pad that comes with an external power supply, or using an USB wall-charger/adapter to power it so you are not placing even further demands (and thus, more generated heat) on the notebook's battery and/or power and regulator circuits.

As for replacing the TIM, maybe you should go back and read what was said in that other TIM thread after you failed to produce any supporting evidence, had your tissy fit and left. See what other, respected posters have said about replacing TIM.

I wonder how many warrenty claims Dell HP Lenevo ect have refused because the tim was not replaced

probable answer = NONE
If the Major Manafactures could SCREW you over because tim not changed
THEY WOULD

as Bill has said in many threads if the tim seal is unbroken then the tim dont necessarily need replacing

Don't you think if the Tim need to be changed those very large corporate business such as DELL would include it in those EXPENSIVE SUPPORT PLANS and then CHARGE FOR IT

Your constant personal attacks say otherwise!

I may and do (and will) disagree with your advice as I feel is needed for the OP to have the true facts to make informed decisions. But I have never, except in direct response to your personal affronts, replied with personal commentary against you.

Now I will take my own advice and ignore any further personal commentary from you in this thread - as it contributes nothing to the technical discussion.

Don't bother replacing the TIM in your laptop it's not worth the time because unless something has happened to break the bond and interfere with heat transfer to the heatsink you will not see any noticeable improvements in your temps. Also those are pretty good temps for a laptop anyway if they aren't idle temps so I wouldn't worry about them unless they climb significantly.

its not about replacing the tim, its about cleaning the fan , when u remove to clean the fan (cooler i mean) you HAVE to replace the tim , thats why u do it.

Never had a Cpu cooler where i had to remove it from the cpu to clean it
Fans unclip / unscrew / detach to give access to the actual attached cooler Heatsink

Unless your a clumsy butcher there is no real need to remove the Heatsink

That's absolutely true. But I don't see why you would need to remove the heatsink (or fan) to clean it. I never have. All I do is stick a wooden glue/Popsicle stick in the fan to hold it stationary (because overspinning can ruin the bearings) and then blast it with compressed air when cleaning out the rest of the interior.

If the fan bearings have gone bad and I am replacing the fan, if they are the type that use screws into heatsink (instead of clipping) that "cut" their own threads as you screw them in, I do pull the whole HSF assembly then to avoid any metal filings falling anywhere. Then of course, a thorough cleaning and fresh application of TIM is required.

Sound practical advice
also
Spinning fans with compressed air or by hand while the pwm cable is attached to motherboard is also a big no no by spinning the fan you turn the DC moter into a DC generator you can induce component failure on the motherboard if fan is spun while connected

Well , if u make the trouble to open the laptop i think its worth to wash the heatsink and clean it as much as possible and replace the TIM , its not needed of course but it's what i do and what i suggest.

if you spin the fan manually you can damage it, fans cannot be cleaned forced them to run, not even unplugged, for cleaning them you have to take them out or put something into fan blades for preventing them to spin…

its not needed of course but it's what i do and what i suggest.

Bill, take it easy man. No need for any of us to get worked up over anything as trivial as opinions on thermal paste...

In my personal experience with loads of laptop coolers, for the cost, you are better off buying a brick and using it to allow better air flow under the laptop. Coolers are good for only a couple to a few degrees at most with the majority of laptops out there.

Benchmark Scores well I've fried a 775' P4 12 years ago, that counts?
well … for being pretty sincere, I hate laptops, but most of my clients have them, so I have to forced deal with them, mostly my jobs on them are about format, take a few hours to clean and restore systems, but if the computer is pretty hot I will repaste it and also take a deep clean on blower fans, fins and heatsinks, that will give a little more life to a laptop, working colder!

Regards,
